New tires - question about what to ask dealer about spedo recalibration

Well, here they are, my new tires. Firestone Destination 245/65/17. I need to lift this thing really bad ... I see this happening in the next couple of weeks

My Stealership wants $135 to do the speedometer recalibration. That is just crazy! Not to mention, they 20" wheels that shook problem. The fact that they never did this when they took the 20" wheels off and gave me the 17" wheels from the Patriot, which I know were a different size. Using my AVIC Z2 and the GPS Vehicle Dynamics I can tell you before these tires were installed at 66.3 MPH the needle on the speedo was just barely about 60. So now I am gonna raise all kinds of hell when I go there this weekend.

Looks good! You're gonna love those tires!

The only thing that was in the scanguage when they did mine were the stock combinations. 215/65-17's or 28" tires were the best that they could do and price was $20. Speedo reads about 57/58 and my Nav unit says 60 with 29.1" tires.

Its been my understanding they can not recalibrate the MK's Speedometers and Odometers for anything larger than 215/65R17's. (28") Since your new tires are 29.5 you may be paying for nothing... If you go through with it I would definitely want a guarantee then immediately check it with a GPS.

Personally I am going the ScanGauge II route also... 30 bucks more and you would have a tool that could save you money in the long run. Just my .02 cents.

as for your 'recalibration'....my guess your dealership (please remember that some of us WORK at these places and tend to take offense at the 'other' term that's being used more and more) probably never 'recalibrated' your Compass when then installed the 20's, so it's still set on the OEM 215/65R17 size.

with that in mind, i've always just done my own recalibration in my head, based on the RPM's (revs per mile) of the tires. in your case, your new 245's are listed with a 706 rpm and the OEM 215's are 743 rpm. the difference being a decrease of 37, meaning a 5% INCREASE in your speed. well, that's how I do it anyway.

what that means is that at 30mph, you're actually doing 31.5, 40mph is 42 and at 70mph, you're actually traveling at 73.5 mph. at least it sounds logical to me.....

anyone else have a 'theory' or can agree or disagree with my figures? from what i've done (had my wife drive next to me on the interstate in her Saturn when i had my Wrangler Unlimited with the 33's), that seemed to be fairly accurate.

anyone? anyone?

My e-mail to them:
I am interested in purchasing one of these lift kits. Are they
currently in stock?? I am so excited that you guys are making this
for the Compass. Any chance of rock rails or sliders for the Compass
coming anytime soon?

Their response:
No plans on the rock sliders yet, but if demand grows, then we will. We do
manufacture the lifts in house so they are currently available.

I placed the order right after that e-mail, so I am just assuming it should be shipping out tomorrow. Maybe I should call them tomorrow to see what is going on.

I've contacted them on the Patriot Sliders and Rock rails and have been assured that those also fit the Compass as I expected they would.
