Need some advice

I am a photographer and I would like to get into some of the some of the wilderness areas of Arizona. I don't want to do serious off-roading like climbing boulders, but I do want to be able to travel on some marginal dirt roads that have some gullies, low spots, moderate moguls, moderate climbing, moderate washes, and small rocks.

I am thinking of getting a used Jeep Patriot for my purposes. I don't want to spend a lot of money as I have another car for my general travel. So I was thinking of a 2010 model or so that I could pay off quickly.

So here are some questions -- and please add your own insights.
1.) Any general comments on the Jeep Patriot for this kind of use?
2.) Is there a particular model year where the feature advances are significant that I would want that year over the previous year?
3.) What customization should be done to improve navigation that wouldn't be too expensive yet make a significant difference?
4.) What model year would be good in your opinion other than the current model?

Any other thoughts are very, very welcome. I am completely new to Jeeps other than seeing them on the road.
