Need a quick response :)

Hello all, owner of a 2008 Jeep Compass Rallye..

Took it to my mechanic last week, rear struts were worn and rear upper controls arms were worn. Both replaced.. Car drove great with no noise till last night.. at low speeds 15 mph or lower, I keep hearing a knocking noise coming from the rear suspension. more so when i go over a indentation in the road. Mechanic says he can't hear it.

I got under the car yesterday with the liftgate up and pressing down i could clearly hear the knocking noise.. It seem like it was coming from the very top of the suspension..

Any idea's before my mechanic gives it back to me?

Loose shock/strut mount? Is that the part of the suspension that you're talking about or someplace else?

He replaced both rear struts and both rear upper control arms last week. He said my sway bar bushings were fine. and everything else underneath wasn't in need of replacing. I couldn't tell where the noise was coming from other then it was coming from the rear end. Mechanic called me last night stated he put the car up on two different racks retightened everything that was replaced, so who knows. I got the car back last night. I DID NOT hear the noise while I was on my way to work.. Only time will tell if he fixed the issue.

Also on a side note. Gramps, a few years ago I took the car to the dealership because of a clunking noise from the rear whenever i made a turn that put weight on the rear. The dealership stated it was due to leaky rear struts and replaced them. told me the issue was fixed.. It didn't fix it. your assumption was correct. it was rear upper control arm bushings that were worn causing the rear wheels to wobble whenever i went into a turn.

As stated in my previous post.. still hearing a knocking noise not as much though. TBH I really cant tell where it's coming from.. To me it sounds like it's coming from the rear end. When I put weight on the rear end and press up and down I can hear what it sounds like I'm hearing on the road..

Here's what I gathered so far.

  • 3 weeks ago had a squeaking noise coming from right rear passenger suspension with a clunking noise on both sides of the car every time I turned into the rear tires
  • Both rear struts AND rear upper control arms were replaced for 3 days car drove fine.
  • New noise appears. Knocking or what sounds like a knocking noise coming from the rear.
  • Noise happens only at low speeds have heard it as high 30 MPH have heard it as low as 5 MPH
  • Mechanic states he cannot hear it. I However can put weight on the rear suspension and press up and down and I can hear what sounds like the same knocking noise I hear at low speeds..
What could it be!

See if you can get a friend to lay under the back end while you bounce on the rear end. Maybe that would help?

Gramps, do you have a layout of the 08 compass rear suspension by chance?

Also I forgot to mention.. the knocking when it happens isn't just one knock it sounds like a bunch of knocks at once like a wobble knock noise.. which would indicate to me something seem's loose and not worn..

Here is an '07 Parts book/manual that may show what you want.
