Looking to buy 2013 Compass, what to get.

My wife is wanting to get a new compass. I am against it but I have only driven ZJs and WJs. We want to get the Limited with leather seats and all the bells and whistles but still want it to have a decent offroad drive train and decent MPG. I know you don't buy a jeep for MPG. As long as it can avg. 18 I will be happy. Both my ZJ and WJ average 12 on a good day. Anything to look out for or make sure I get when we get a Compass? How does the 4x4 work on the compass? I am use to having the 242 case and being able to physically shift. How are the axles? Do they have anything equal to a LSD or vari-lock? What is the life expectancy on the 4cyl engine? For the people who have bought a Compass, do you like it, would you buy it again? I have looked at them at 5 different local dealerships but they only have 2wd sport models on the lot. Plenty of Libertys and Grand Cherokees.

Good description of how the 4wd works on jeep.com. My patriot freedom drive 2 averages about 18 mpg.

As far as 4wd i go with the freedom drive 2 if your ever going offroad extra ground clearance, skids, tow hooks, hill decent control, and a low range gear. As far as the engine either engine is pretty reliable, they are just noisy. Ive seen the 2.4 last 200k easy no problems in lancers ( mitsubishi makes the engine). The cvt in my opinion is not bad, i got used to it pretty quick, very smooth. The compass definitely is no speedster though, but its not bad. I average about 20 in town, 23 highway which is sticker. The only thing id change about mine is i would get the touch screen radio and maybe the leather.

From what I see the leather is only offered in the Limited models.

I got a sport patriot pretty basic but with fdII, for an all wheel drive independent suspension vehicle it is very respectable off road. See pictures I've posted on my blog, www.notthemomma.com. I am pretty easy on the gas pedal and get about 25mpg's. I have about 4500 miles is all but no issues whatsoever.

My Limited FD I averages 19 City, 27 Highway. The 4x4 works well -- so far, I've not spun the wheels a single time during inclement weather days when the locking lever was engaged. The animation on Jeep.com Fujative mentioned shows you exactly what it's all about. The Leather seats are nice (wish they had more thigh support tho), great rear legroom, the BA sound is pretty good for stock, and the GPS is easier to use than my wife's Mercedes. Make sure you have the full Bluetooth package - on 2011 & 12's at least, as I recall it was possible to get the voice command without the voice actuated calling. I also have the remote start, a feature I didn't know I couldn't live without until I had it. If a CVT isn't your bag, the 2014 FD I's have a conventional 6 speed. Good luck in your search!

this isn't even close to being true.

OP, when looking at the different packages, you will see a lot of people say "get FD-II! get FD-II! get FD-II!" they want a loaded up jeep, or they want to pretend like they can go offroad. then in 3 months you're going to be back here complaining about the fuel mileage. the FD-II is worthless for most people, because most people don't buy an MK for the purposes of going offroad. the FD-I is a much more popular option, and will net you much better fuel economy. if you want all the goodies that go along with the FD-II package other than the piss-poor fuel mileage, you can opt for the all-weather capability group. that will give you everything except for the different transfer case.

I would like to have some offroad capabilities. It does carry the Jeep name so.... As long as it will avg 18 or better I will be happy. I can sacrifice a few mpgs for a better t-case. My wife and I do a lot of kayaking, mountain biking, and camping and would like to be able to get off the beaten path a little with it, still got my WJ or ZJ if I really want to go offroading. I definitely want a good awd option for my wife since she is not use to driving in the snow like I am from being raised in the midwest. She is a southern girl and has very limited experience in the snow. I love how both of my Grand Cherokees drive in the snow with the awd option and I am hoping the compass is the same. What is the exact difference in the FDI and FDII in real world applications? From first hand experience, not what jeep.com says.

I'm also looking into a new Compass, but I decided to wait for the 2014 in a couple of months.

I was going to get the FD2 option or at least try and test drive one and see, mostly just because I want the extra height. I honestly won't be driving off any paved surface unless the zombie apocalypse happens. So the winter package will have the extra height and other goodies, but be FD1? Can FD1 still lock it into real 4WD? I don't want cheapy AWD that everyone else makes, where your back wheels don't kick in till your fronts are already sliding all over the place. But FD1 in 4WD doesn't have a low gear, only FD2? I pretty much keep it in low all the time in snow, in my AWD ford escape.

I traded my 08 wrangler unlimited for my escape.. big mistake

AWD or a 2wd front wheel drive car is your best bet for snow. Low just has too much traction. I have never had to use anything but 2wd/awd for snow. Tried low when I first got my WJ and was all over the place. Just way to much power to the wheels.

Sounds to me like you're making a case for FD1. IMO Dirt road = FD1, Off Road = FD2. Another thing you might wanna check for on a test drive -- see if your wife is tall enough to get in and out of an FD2 on a daily basis. My wife is only 5'2"...so for us the FD1 is the right combination of convenience and capability.

I would like to be able to take it off road, not just dirt and gravel roads. Some of the places when go kayaking at is pretty rough and a lot of off camber situations. My Wj can handle it no problem but a regular car or a small suv like the compass might have a problem. My wife is only 5'5 but has no problem getting out of my ZJ with 33s so Im sure the Compass would be no problem.

My FD2....as low as 14 mpg in the summer with A/C on, and light city driving. Its been 17ish lately. There is no possible way to get the advertised 20 out of it. (we here on the forum suspect its the 10% ethanol gas we get in california). It does get the 23 highway though. Runs about 3,000 rpm at freeway speeds. No overdrive.
