Key Replacement

My wife drives an 08 patriot with keyless entry that i lost my key to. I went to the dealer ship today and they want 146.00 for the key, and an additional 40 to program. Is there a cheaper alternative to this or do i just need to bite the bullet. Thanks in advance.

That new keyless entry (no key at all) is a killer. I haven't looked for their replacements yet but if you only have one I'm sure the dealer would have to program it. There should be a number on the outside of the case of the one that you have left. Google or search ebay for that number and see if anything comes up.

I lost the remote for my pickup last year, and the dealer wanted a crazy amount of money to replace it. So I started calling locksmiths and found a couple that could do it for a fraction of the price and the one I hired even drove to my work and programmed the remote right there for me. Might be worth looking into. A lot of those locksmiths have the same technology the dealers have. If I remember correctly, I think I only paid around $50 for my new remote. So I bought 2 for less than the dealer wanted for 1.

Be sure to only use OEM keys, not aftermarket. You can get them through a locksmith fairly cheap, considering what they cost at a dealer. Programming is generally about the same as the dealer charges. If you happen to have 2 keys and are wanting a 3rd key, you can program that yourself. Directions are in your owner's manual.

You can also find OEM keys on eBay. Make sure they are uncut and have the same part number on the fob that is on your current key(s).

You can't go by the part #. those change all the time. Best thing to do is NOT buy
from eBay. Best bet is to go to a locksmith. They can make sure what you are buying is correct.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I've had no problems. With eBay it's always "buyer beware". I also think that the search is half the fun.

My local ACE hardware claims to be able to make chip keys, But I have not had one made so I can't say for sure they work or not.
