Insulation beneath engine

I have a Jeep Patriot, and a marten stripped away some of the soft fabric insulation on the underside of the engine to make a nest or something. I wanted to ask:
What is this insulation actually for? Is it a problem that some of it is gone?

The only think under my engine is a skid plate. Must be a Euro thing for sound deadening.
