ignition switch gone bad??

I've done some research and seems like it maybe more of a common problem then I thought with these compasses.

I have a 08 rallye with 2.4l auto

my cars been stranded for the last week because one day I got in it and it would not start, I turn the key all the way and it just doesn't do anything, all my lights come on no problem, it doesn't turn over or even try...

it doesn't even dim my headlights when I try to start it, so I'm thinking its a bad ignition switch, does this sound like the right route to go?

well I put a new ignition switchon and the little steel rod that goes from the key into the switch, was broken...

would that have caused my car not to start? I'm really not even sure what that little rod does, but even with the new switch plugged in it wont start, so I'm assuming that little rod served some kind of a purpose
