How effective/important is BLD?

Hi all.

I'm looking at a 2014 4x4 Patriot Latitude. I live in the desert (29 Palms California) and would like to use the vehicle for some mild offroad, but I don't need it to be a Wrangler.

I definitely don't want the CVT as I've heard almost nothing but negatives about it's performance, noise and effectiveness, but from what I can see, the CVT's "Freedom drive" package is the only way to get the "trail rated" featurs like the BLD?

Now, from what I understand, BLD is just programming in the ABS. Is it possible to add BLD to a non-CVT Patriot? Is it even necessary for mild-duty offroading?

Thanks in advance!

I have a fdii, and when I off road, the bld's kick in often. The fdi have blds, it is a lot more aggressive on a fdii. Can a fdi have it be added? No. At least not without paying somebody buckets of money to break Chryslers ecu code and reprogram your patriot. What kind of off roading do you plan on doing? I knew I would be pushing the limits of my patriot, and wanted to have the most capable one I could get.

the cvt is actually just fine. Reliable, smooth, and actually effective off road.

Aroundincircles is correct on the programming. BLD is part of the package and is connected to the VIN code that controls everything and can't be 'disconnected'.

What would be the source(s) of this evaluation?
