hopefully i've ruled out the transmission...

hi all, i've recently purchased an '09 patriot and love it. it's a 5 speed manual because i just don't trust these cvt's. on the other hand, my wife just purchased an '07 compass with the cvt because she used to drive a nissan rogue and liked it blah blah blah. well, i noticed last night that is has a certain kind of knock that increases as you accelerate. it's pretty fast, sounds kind of like a fan blade coming in contact with something. as you get up to speed it becomes unnoticable. now, when i decelerate and get to where i can hear it again it gets slower (i'm not sure if it is perfectly in time with the wheel turn, i'll check again tonight) and when i put the brakes on, right when i'm coming to a stop i can hear metal. it doesn't sound brakes, more like gears clanking i guess. now i've tried this even with the car in neutral and it still makes the same sounds, so i'm left to believe it's some kind of axle or drive shaft type issue. the thing is, i don't have a clue how these front wheel drive 4x4's do what they do so i don't know where to even begin my search. does anyone have any ideas or suggestions. if you want more details please ask and i'll do my best to help you help me.

Check all your Drive shafts around the suspension arms for loose wires or electric plugs that are rubbing on the spinning shaft. I had a wheel speed sensor on a different car come unclipped from its tie-down once and rub on it which caused a clicking noise proportional to wheel speed.
