Gas Mileage on 4x4 w Off Road

I am wondering what folks are getting and if I should see improvements on my Patriot as it gets broken in. Currently seeming to average 18.2 MPG freeway AND surface roads. Rather disappointed. I know it's heavier than the 4x2 and has the Off Road Group which we will be using but I had thought it might be a bit better with gas mileage. I am really watching my driving but can't get it higher.

I think off road group is only available on the Limited but in case it's on the Sport, my Patriot is a Limited.

On mine (FD I) the mpg was a little erratic until I hit 3000 mile, so it should settle in about your first oil change. It may be too that you develop new techniques to drive the CVT. That along with the lower gear ratios I'm sure is not helping right now. You probably will end up with 21-23 mpg eventually.

I am averaging over 25 mpg ... and when I have experimented with using the locked 4x4 mode, I have averaged 27 mpg. yes, that is correct, higher mpg in locked 4x4 mode. The first time it happened I thought it was just a fluke, but I have consistently repeated that number (and the highest was 27.4). This has been on 2 lane highways, doing 60 mph most of the time (rural upstate and Adirondack highways).

I have CVT, not the 5 speed.

safaribabe has the FD II/off-road package and is running the 19:1 low so she just wont get what some of us will.

My FDII has consistently gotten 19 mpg since we got it. I figure between houston traffic and houston weather-think air conditioner all the time- that was normal. I did start experimenting with the mpg average meter deal and have gotten another 2-5mpg with the ac off and keeping the speed under 70mph.

The Limited does not come with the trail-rated off road package (skid plates, 19:1 crawl ratio, etc..). The Sport does offer it. Correct me if I read your statement wrong.

BTW, I have an '07 Patriot Limited with 1,400 miles on it and get about 19-20 per gallon on mixed city/hwy driving.

nope...

You are incorrect. The Off Road Group is available on the Limited.

Now up to 20 mpg.. combo local and freeway driving.

Just curious. Are y'all talking actual calculated MPG or just reading it from the EVIC?

My dealer will be getting a phone call! He steered me away from the Sport (w/ Off Road Group) in favor of the Limited which, he said, did not cross over; Limited for more refinement, Sport for more off-road gusto. Perhaps this was true for the inventory he had on-hand, but now I feel cheated seeing as though I could of had both.

But still, I'm happy--just not as much!

You may want to do an actual calculation. Before I had the TBS done my actual was lower than the EVIC, now it's higher.

I have an '08 Patriot Limited Off-Road package with FDII. How fast can you go when you activate the 4WD switch (not the "crawl" mode) ?? Is it just like your typical 4WD High in other vehicles ??
I'm heading out to Missouri deer hunting next week via the Interstates and they're calling for rain/snow. Can I punch the 4WD button and let 'er go ??
