The earlier ones just come up with a check engine light and not the Gas Cap one. On mine the codes read that it was a leak in the fuel pressure system. Jacked around with the gas cap and the next time I filled up it went away. Then it happened on my wife's GC and since I had bought a locking cap for mine in the meantime I put my old cap on hers and all was fine. Give it some time it may go away by itself.

do you have a scan tool to clear the code? if not take it to auto zone, have them clear it, and see if it comes back.

Ok so problem was a defective ESIM switch. Something to do with emissions system.

ESIM stands for Evaporative System Integrity Monitor.
The PCM uses the ESIM to detect a loose or missing gas cap.
