FYI - Service Bulletin 08-037-12 - Certain Switches intermittent/don't work

Ignore if not interested.

NUMBER: 08-037-12
GROUP: Electrical
DATE: May 25, 2012

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 08-058-11, DATED OCTOBER
20, 2011, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THE REVISIONS
MADE TO THIS BULLETIN WAS TO REMOVE THE CALIBER (PM) VEHICLES. THESE
VEHICLES SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL BULLETIN
BECAUSE THEY USE A DIFFERENT SWITCH. ALSO PART NUMBERS WERE
REMOVED THAT DIDN'T PERTAIN TO THIS BULLETIN.
SUBJECT:
Steering Wheel Mounted Audio And Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)
Switches Function Intermittently Or Not At All
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting and replacing the right side steering wheel mounted speed
control switch if necessary.
MODELS:
2011 (JK) Wrangler
2011 (MK) Compass
NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built prior to June 1, 2011 (MDH 0601XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Both of the following symptom/Conditions must be exhibited:
1. The steering wheel mounted audio and/or EVIC switches may function intermittently
or not at all. It may be noticed that the switch works properly after using the horn,
unplugging and reconnecting the steering wheel switches or a battery disconnect.
2. The speed control switches function properly.
NOTE: The Audio/EVIC switches are hard wired (MUX) to the Speed control switch
and then the Speed control switch communicates over a LIN bus to the
cluster. This concern was caused by the Speed control switch not properly
communicating with the Cabin Compartment Node (CCN). This concern only
affected the Audio/EVIC switch inputs not the Speed control inputs.
NOTE: DTC U1109 - Lost Communication with LIN Steering Wheel Controls may, or
may not, be stored in the (CCN).

Someone should tell them it is the Patriot too. My 2011 has issues with the switches not working all the time.

Have you told your dealer and have they done anything?

Not yet. I don't drive a lot these days due to being disabled so my visits are few and far between( 2X's a year barring a major problem ). I usually keep a list of these small things and have them handled at the next visit for an OC. As long as it isn't something critical I usually wait until I am there for something else. I might go in and have it looked at just to see if they will handle it based on this TSB and post the reslts?

I'm not sure it is related. You could give your dealer a call and see what they say. They might want to look at it.

My Patriot has done that twice. Both times the controls came back by shutting the car down and restarting.

I have an appt Thursday morning.

From what I can see the sterring wheel and switches on the 2011 Compass and Patriot are exactly the same? The info in that TSB is EXACTLY what happens to me. The cruise control switches have always worked fine( as per TSB ). It is the other switches that work sometimes and other times they don't( again per TSB ).

Glad you made an appointment - they are able to have "hands on" and diagnose it. Kinda hard to do that via a list post.

Please post what they come up with.

I'll go a little retro here. Mine has been to the dealer to fix the Cruise Control three times and it will work for a while and then quit shortly after that. One time they said they were waiting for a new clock spring because there was a change in it (I never did believe that). I gave up on them fixing it and someday I'll get around to doing it myself. I also had the radio controls start messing up on what they were supposed to do, that they fixed.
