P1420 is a Catalyst Temperature Sensor Failure not an EVAP code??? I am not even sure it is a code a Patriot can throw?

I'm guessing it wasn't a Jeep dealer mechanic you took it to. If you can't solve the problem you might have to bite the bullet and go to a dealer. Common problem might be gas cap, try removing and replacing it. But not sure. Can't find any info on the web that really makes any sense of that code. Could be NHPATRIOT is on to something with a sensor failure. Let us know how you make out with this, so we can all broaden our knowledge base. Good luck

I don't see a P1420 in my SM for the 2007's or any P14XX codes at all. I do see a P0420 that relates to a Catalyst and the O2 sensors. If it is a gas cap emission type leak it could be as simple as take the cap on and off, refuel or change the cap. I had that with my wife's GC and my Compass. I replaced mine with a locking type and then later used my old cap on her's and they both have been fine for years.

That is what I meant by I wasn't even sure a Patriot/Compass can throw that code. Seems to be specific to a few mfg's and not all like many OBDII codes.

The gas cap code should be PO442

I didn't have a code reader and the dealer told me what the code was. It pointed to either a gas cap, a leaky evap canister or line going to the canister. These were both only about a year old so I didn't think there would be any leaks and they were much harder to check and locate if there was one. I took the gas cap as the easy fix and it worked. It could be a problem as far as emissions go but not as far as driveability. I would wait until you've filled up a few times to call it a real problem and worth investigating time and money in to it.

Computers can throw funny codes from time to time. I wouldn't panic over it.

I did do an extensive write up on what the system goes through to check all of the systems and what it takes for them to turn the warnings on/off by themselves. You may want to look threw it for your own peace of mind. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f98/e...seless-855751/

OK, That just came on in mine too at just shy of 85K miles. It is the I/M light. Inspection/Maintenance light and I don't have a code yet on mine. I had NAPA try to pull a code and their reader said it couldn't do it possibly because a fuse was out. I've checked the belt and fluid levels and don't see anything wrong either. As soon as the weather warms up a bit I'll check it out myself and do a tune up but I am interested to see what others might say about it.

DIY or farm it out? I do my own so I don't think of labor costs. The cost of the parts will very depending on the quality and where you get them. Most of what I found online said that the I/M light does refer to emissions and I'm hoping it's really the air filter but could be an O2 sensor. Neither is that expensive and you'll need a O2 socket to r & r that. Mine has never been replaced and just using my mileage as an indicator it may be the problem.
Oil & filter (due)
Air filter (over due)
Spark plugs (Due)
Check all of your fluid levels and whatever else I see that may need fixing. Those are the basics but it's hard to tell what else you may find.

Under a $100 by a long shot.

Great write up Gramps!

I just want to emphasize this blurb from the 2008 Patriot Owner Manual:
Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)
This light is part of an Onboard Diagnostic
system called OBD II that monitors emissions,
engine, and automatic transmission control systems.
The light will illuminate when the key is in the
ON/RUN position before engine start. If the light does
not come on when turning the key from OFF to ON/
RUN, have the condition checked promptly.
Certain conditions such as a loose or missing gas cap,
poor fuel quality, etc., may illuminate the light after
engine start. The vehicle should be serviced if the light
stays on through several of your typical driving cycles.
In
most situations the vehicle will drive normally and will
not require towing.
If the MIL flashes when the engine is running, serious
conditions may exist that could lead to immediate loss of
power or severe catalytic converter damage. The vehicle
should be serviced as soon as possible if this occurs.

Thx Lee, I was going to post that and ran out of time again. It's important to look into it but not a crisis when it is solidly illuminated. Fortunately I should be in the 50's and dry next week so that I can get to whatever issues that mine is having. Right now I am a 'stay at home geezer' so driving somewhere is not a priority.
