Is this dumb? Spare tire question?

Anyone think about mounting the spare to the lift/hatch in the back instead of having it inside? Why ... more room for sub woofers

Just curious - please no flames

IMHO I like it better without it being on the back hatch like it is on the liberty...ya, it sucks that its inside, as I could use it for storing cleaning supplies, or something else instead...but I think it looks better without it on there!

I don't think that they look bad on the rear but many people don't like them there because if you hit something backing up it smashes in the hatch. Maybe I'm strange but I kinda like the safari look with it on the roof rack but I don't know how practical that would be.

Dakar-style yo!

I'd do it - but I'd want to find another OEM wheel so my spare matched the full set.

That would also free up some room for a fuel cell to connect to the main tank or subs or whatever. Compass Safari or Compass Dakar has a nice ring to it since Rallye is already taken.

I too like the idea of it being on the back... it just screams JEEP. However with it being a lift gate it makes it somewhat impractical. Can you imagine lift a freaking tire everytime you wanted to get into the back? You would definately have to swap out the struts (lifts) to help support the 30 additional pounds of the tire and wheel.

There is another way and that is a by replace the bumper that has a swing gate to mount the tire on (they make hitch mount swing ways too but then you loose the ability to tow). This type of mount also helps keep you from damaging your lift gate if you "accidently back into something", since its not actually on your liftgate. I am sure in a few years ARB and others will be making bumpers for our rigs and yes, then I will probably have my spare hanging out on the back But for now I'll probably (when I can find another full size wheel) have it mounted on my roof rack like gramps said.

Jeepster do you mind if I use that "Moab Killer" idea? thats the best theme name I have heard thus far... the only thing I could think of was "Mighty King" or "Misunderstood Kin". I had also thought of several mountain variations but none that I liked...

of course, you'll have to keep in mind that you would need to reposition the license plate. otherwise, you'll be covering it up and i would doubt the law enforcement community would go along with such a modification.
