Compass vs. Patriot for a possible new wifey vehicle

Wifey has suddenly decided that our 06 Durango she drives is eating up her wallet when it eats up the fuel. Being a Jeep chick of old (I have her old 99 TJ), she immediately thought of the Jeep brand. So last night we have started looking at our options and one she likes is possibly getting a Jeep Compass or Patriot.

So, I guess since you guys actually have them, what are your likes/dislikes? any major or minor common problems? What kind of MPG do you get? etc etc.

One thing that would be of importance is how well they work with kids. We have a 2 year old right now, with the possibility of having another sometime in the next couple years.

So please, share any of your experiences, love em, hate em, what ever. Im just starting to do some research, so any insight would be appreciated.

thanks!

It seemed to me that the Patriot has a bit more interior room. Mine like the looks of the Patriot better as well, but that's an opinion type thing.

My wife hates the look of the Patriot and loves the Compass. Hence the reason for one we own now.

For kids, either should be fine. There's lots of places to hook up child seats, etc. We hope to have kids eventually and that was a factor when we chose our Jeep.

the main difference when we test drove both was the patriot had much more "windshield room" for want of a better term. neither of us liked the way the compass windshield sloped down in front of our faces.

patriot has a bit more ground clearance (I believe) and a bit more cargo room.

one thing we noticed was that the patriot with stock tires seemed a bit squirrelly when driving it due the tires having a more taller (more flexible) sidewall, the 17" wheels are much better. the compass with its 18"s might be even better, so if handling is your thing, the compass will probably eek out a bit more than the patriot.

we also like the patriots styling a tad more than the compass but thats a personal thing.

The 4X4's on both models sit a little higher than the FWD's, The Limited's sit higher than the Sports on each model, too. Outside of the Patriot FD II that has the most ground clearance the Compass Limited 4X4 comes in second and the Patriot Limited 4X4 comes in 3rd. This is being VERY picky tho, different tires can change that and I'm not talking about any monster tires, just common replacement. They all use different springs.

The wife and I thought that the Patriot did offer the best visibility out the front and on the rear sides but we still prefer the Compass' looks just because it wasn't quite so boxy.

The extra room in the rear is a little triangular area that's in the top rear because of roof design. I've never had a need to put anything up there and I can load more in mine with the fold down front seat than the wife can in her Grand.

BTW. Wife's GC is a 4.0. I switched her over to Amsoil about 2 months ago and she's gone from 17 up to 19 mpg. We still take mine on all of the trips thow!
