Compass limp mode

Hey, all, I've just come across a problem I am not familiar with. I bought my wife a 2011 compass last year and, up to yesterday, I've treated like $20000 car. Yesterday, I treated it like a Jeep. Big mistake. It has been extremely dry in Il lately, and I was driving a few friends and my son up the river bank. Everything was groovy until I tried to cross the river. The water level was at about a foot and a half all the way across. I hit the water and immediately found myself in limp mode with virtually no power to the driveshaft. I turned it off, waited, started it and went right back into limp. It was fairly humorous to see my jeep, with its trail rated emblem, sitting in a foot and a half of water and unable to move. Also slightly disappointing. Anyways, 2 four wheelers and a side by side later, the jeep was back on land and running perfectly. The wife is mad and there is about 3 inches of water on the floorboard, but valuable lessons were learned... like I need to buy a wrangler. Anyways, I had fun. It would ne nice to know what caused this, for future reference. Any suggestions?

It sounds like something got wet. How fast/hard did you hit the water?
