I'm doing a little fact-finding on adding the "Bright Side Molding" on my Compass Sport.
Here's what I'm looking to find out..
Do they come painted or unpainted as replacement parts?
What color are they painted normally? (same color as my sport wheels I'm assuming)
How do they attach.. 3M foam tape?
Close-up pics would be appreciated if anyone is able, not quite sure how they fit on the car... The cavities on my Sport's doors sure seem like something needs to live in there though
I vote the compass & patriot technical forum should be renamed to "Ask Gramps"
Maybe my username should have been THE LIBRARIAN Really, I hate to be ignored and I don't want anybody to feel like they are. Everybody deserves some kind of response.
Since this is called "Bright Molding" I would expect it to be silver like the wheels. No fasteners, just tape. This picture and part numbers are from the '07 parts book and #5 & #7 are what you need. The suffix has been superseded to AB in the '08 parts book.
I have no idea what the "K3J" etc means on parts 4 & 6. maybe Jeepster55 can fill us in.
1. Run a piece of masking tape from the front to the rear 1.5" below the upper edge of the inset. Only the measurement at the very front and rear are important, the distance from the upper lip to the tape will vary in the center. Just keep the tape straight.
2. Clean body surface with MOPAR® Super Kleen solvent or equivalent. Wipe surface dry with lint free cloth.
3. Remove protective cover from tape on back of molding (2, second picture). Apply molding to body below the masking tape guide.
4. Remove masking tape guide and firmly press molding to body surface to assure adhesion.

Thanks for the info Gramps! I think 4 and 6 are the color-matched upper-mid door molding, and the K3J, etc are color codes maybe? Armed with the part numbers, I was able to look up prices. $45.25 each for the front doors, $34.00 each for the rear doors, $158.50 total (MSRP). Not too bad really... Unsure about the silver color though; does anyone have experiece with a shop that does chrome plating on plastic parts? It would really set it off, especially with the Mopar chrome gas flap!
I looked through exterior parts...and I entered the part number provided by Gramps, but nothing. Rob, Dave or Gramps, is that one of those parts that only dealers can order?
Definately looks like a part you'd have to order from a dealer. http://www.moparpartsamerica.com is where I went to look up parts prices, they list MSRP and seem to offer a pretty reasonable discount. Kinda nice having a parts database online... even if it's almost impossible to use it without part numbers.
actually i've already been down this road. the Limited molding are, of course, CHROME and come that way.
the 'other' moldings listed i have yet to see on a Compass, but i ordered one just to see what it looked like. it was narrow (about 3/4") and came "pre-painted".
should anyone want to go the 'pre-painted' route, i suggest you do it soon. Mopar has a bad habit of only having 'pre-painted' moldings available for a year or so and then they change to a "P.A.R." (paint as required) and would only come in, more than likely, primer.
just a heads up. as for me, i decided NOT to go with any of them. i like the looks of my Compass Sport PLAIN!!!
P.S. if anyone wants to PM me, i'll give them the prices on either the painted or chrome moldings once i get to work to check them out.
