Bike Racks used on your Compass

Just bought a new Compass. Want to know if anyone has used a strap rack and how it has worked. Yakima and Thule have the strap racks for hatchbacks but will not recommend them for a Compass on their website. if someone has used them and they work I will get one, if not I guess I will wait till I receive my paycheck from uncle Sam in the spring and get a hitch and hitch rack.

If the strap has to go over the top of the hatch, you can't use it on a Compass.
The roof bars or a hitch mount are probably the best bet...

It's funny, but I came here to post about the same topic and then saw you beat me to it. I needed a bike rack and the guy at the bike store said the Thule was approved for use on an '08 Compass. So I bought it and looked at the manual more closely when I got home and noticed it said it's approved for the '07 Compass but doesn't mention the '08. The website says it's not approved for either so it's very confusing. I'm going to call Thule tomorrow and see what they say. I've used it for a couple of days with one bike on it and have had no problems, but I have a feeling it shouldn't be used because you can tell it puts too much stress on the plastic part that sticks out on the hatch.

Go to this post and when you click on a link you'll see more on the Thule with bikes on it. No difference between the '07 & '08 for the sport bars and mounting.

Gramps, that's the top rack. We're talking about the strap rack that goes on the back of the car where the hatchback is.

can we open this thread back up for discussion?? Was just wondering if anyone has ever bought a good, cheap bike carrier for their compass. I dont have a hitch receiver and dont want to buy one at all, so the hitch mount bike carriers are out of the question.

I also noticed this thread hasnt been active in over a year so maybe some of you have had some experience with them now.

I picked one up at wally world its a sports rack for around 40 bucks. Works well on my Mazda but I don't like the way it pulls down on the spoiler on the Compass. I installed it and it did fit but like I said I didn't like the way the straps pulled down on the spoiler. I didn't put any bikes on it just for that reason. I think any strap on rack will be the same way as there really isn't any other way to route the straps to clip on to the hatch.
I think the only way to go it with either a hitch rack or a roof mount either way you are talking a couple hundred bucks.

I looked at a lot of different racks and went with the hitch style one. The hitch was about $150.00 and I installed it myself. Very easy to do.

i can get a hitch receiver from work (Napa) for about 150 my cost, but I dont really have any other use for it other than the bike carrier so I dont suppose thatll be an option.

Thats the only use my hitch receiver gets. Bike rack only. I wanted a good strong rack so i went with that type.

You can also make a tow hook to go in the receiver. It could come in handy.
