Backspacing

In the TJ forum we have a list of the stock rims, and their dimensions. I was wondering what the stock backspacing was on the patriot. Whenever i get around to buying one, i wanted to get some 28" tires, and aussie lift, and probubly a different backspacing to stick them out a bit more to compensate for the lift.

If you stick them out too far you put a lot of stress on the CV joints. 28" diameter tires is the largest OEM size and works well.

I understand that, thats why i want the measurements. If I know the stock backspacing, i could buy aftermarket rims with maybe a 1 inch difference, rather then guessing and hoping for the best. I dont trust wheel spacers.

I've got some 16's in the shed. If I can get threw the snow this weekend I'll measure them. Also my full sized spare is a 17 steel, I'll check that one too.

OK. So I braved the cold, the snow, the wind, the long hike out to the shed (up hill, both ways) and after moving the lawn fertilizer/seed spreader thingy, the lawn mower, the lawn chairs and digging threw the copper mesh, various parts and a Challenger gas tank and mounting straps, I finally got to my 16" Patriot rims! (The previous garbage was for entertainment purposes only!)

I went looking around to find a good description to help others understand what the heck we would be talking about with Backspacing and Offset and how to measure this stuff. I'm happy to say that I found a very good description of this that even I could understand. It's at Rimz One. Mike Mashburn, the Pres wrote the article, his lovely wife, Emily, put me in touch with Scott Campbell, Director of Strategic Marketing, who sent me a direct link to the write up so that I didn't have to use second hand sourcing. All nice helpful people! You may want to click on the Home page icon to see what they've got. Added info on OFFSET.

Any way,

16" Patriot steel wheels are 7 1/2" wide, 5.3125 Backspacing and a + 39.75mm offset.

17" Steel Full Size Spare is 7 1/2" wide, 5.375 Backspacing with a + 41.275mm offset

Since back spacing is measured in mm and 1mm = 0.039" let's use +40mm as a standard. And since 1" = 25.4mm, if you want 1" of more backspacing then it's +40 - 25.4 = +14.6mm (+15), the new backspacing.

Bob, thanks for that write up. I have 17" alloy wheels with Goodyear SRA tires 215/65/17 that were the same package that comes with the trail rated FDII Patriot. My alloy wheels are 6.5" wide and so are the 17" steel wheels that I put my winter tires on. If I bought wider tires I would like wider rims.

Mike, thanks for the kind words. Also keep in mind that narrow tires are supposed to be better for snow, but then my wife's GC has HUGE tires on it and she doesn't have any problems!

Another note is don't forget the tire pressure sensors if your going with additional wheels for winter tires or whatever. I've found Dorman now lists them and the best price is from Rock Auto for just shy of $100 for 4 with less than $6 1st class shipping. The part # is 974-001 and the Dorman site says they fit from about 2006 - 2010 CDJ's, some down to 2004 or so.
