FYI- most after market hitches do not require cutting the bumper cover. If you are going to put on the factory hitch- use a fine tooth handsaw- the bumper cover material is thin and prone to ripping- go slow and be careful.

I used my jig saw with a plastic and "fine" wood cutting blade (10 teeth per inch) set on a slow speed just so it didn't run away from me and for better control. Worked great!

I find it strange that you have to do some trimming for the Mopar hitch yet the Reese and Hidden Hitch don't require any. I installed a Hidden Hitch on mine in about 20 minutes. 4 bolts, no drilling, no cutting. I only use it for a bike carrier so I didn't wire it up.

The Hidden Hitch hangs down lower than the MOPAR hitch.

hmmm ...

does the design of the jeep hitch look stronger ?

not just welded to the bottom of the main crossmember ... but using the safety chain gusset for additional strength

Maybe, but how strong does it have to be?

The DrawTite I installed is rated for 3,500 lbs- far more than the Compass rating of 2,000 lbs (with trailer prep). It cost much less and no modifications to the body was necessary.

How much does this cost? I'm looking at getting one. I have an 08 patriot 4x4. Does Jeep install these aftermarket?

How hard is it to wire it up yourself?

Wyckoff is close to being the least expensive for the MOPAR hitch, the aftermarket ones are less. The hidden hitch is very popular and I believe that it takes a 2" drawbar where the MOPAR one is 1 1/2". Most dealers can install these and so can U-Haul and other truck rental places. It could pay to shop around.

Be sure to get the right wiring harness. If I have my facts straight the '07's take a 3 wire pigtail and the '08's take a 2 wire and they all take the relay type system unless you get the factory one.

I know I posted it somewhere... we never did get photos of it ... and I will get some up when I get back to town...

But we took the factory hitch and removed the "small" receptacle and re-welded in the normal 2" size reciever ...

It hangs down about 1/2" lower from factory but is snug up instead of being real low like the hidden-hitch and allows the use of normal size towing items like the picinic table we bought a few years back for use at the drive in theatre.. and the trailer without wheels... and of course the bike rack...

Ted...

I have a Hidden Hitch with a 2" receiver (same as the photo above). Last weekend I made four trips to Home Depot and hauled 2200 lbs of block home each trip. Love the hitch!

Gramps, trailer hitch?

I can't seem to find it but many, many months ago, you had posted instructions for adding a trailer hitch to a Patriot. Can you repost here when you have time?

Thanks so much!

My husband just put a Reese hitch on his Patriot and didn't have to cut the bumper facia at all. He was able to complete the install within an hour (it could have been less).

Do you have a link as to where he got it? I'm looking into buying a hitch as well.

Here's mine on my Compass, same install as the Patriot. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showt...=346762&page=4

The Mopar Hitch sits a little higher up and normally requires cutting the rear fascia. The Hidden Hitch, Reese and several others hang just low enough that the cutting isn't necessary. The fascia cuts very easily with a blade made for plastic in your jig saw.
