Dave Zatz seems a straight shooter but all reviews are subjective and the shortcomings he perceived are near all in subjective areas. I like reviews from people who know things automotive but I give more weight to the experiences of folk like those of this forum. And they seem to like the Patriot.

couldn't agree more- if it had been for the so-called "professional " reviews, I would have never bought my Compass, and I'm sure I'd be just as pleased with the Pat - except for the name, maybe. The meaning of patriot has been a bit distorted in the last few years, ah..let's not go there.

Here's a more favorable review on the Patriot FD II. note the name on the website.

http://www.gmtoday.com/news/auto/topnews32.htm

I lol’d when I read this line.

“First and foremost, the off-road package - which includes a low range for its gearbox…”

What gearbox is this?
