AIC's Patriot write up:

So I took the time to do a write up on my adventures with my patriot so far (kinda like what Kenny-g's been doing) I'm not going to repost the whole thing here, but will add any new things. or if you have any questions, feel free to ask me here.

Here is a link to the write up:

Yeah, the forum I linked to is a bit rough on me, but since I take it out regularly, they don't give me as much crap as they used to... But its one of the few local active forums. And I am usually able to go out and fine people to doing stuff with. I just wish I could go to the dealers and ask for the email of everybody who bought a fdii patriot in the last year, see if I can't get a local patriot group going.

KLRJEEPER 03-22-2013 03:40 AM

Most of those people bought them because it has a trail rated badge for mall crawling. I used my fdii properly as well. I want it back actually, for the wife to drive and have another ultra capable rig. Love the Mk!

I know, but I think a few more people would actually use it off road if they had somebody to go with, and knew where to go.

Not so sure with the pat. Mostly old people and soccer moms own them here. I used mine off road a lot.

FujativeOCR 03-22-2013 10:37 AM

I'm 31. Bought it at 29 for snow driving.

KLRJEEPER 03-22-2013 11:03 AM

good choice fujative. the most capable Small SUV in it's class. its amazing what you can get over in a patriot, that the other "cute" ute's can't.

aroundincircles 03-22-2013 12:05 PM

I think it would be smart to contact all the FDII MK owners and start some sort of club for anybody who wants to join. I just don't think the typical buyer of the MK is aware of the benefits of being part of a club, and there would be a lot more out off roading if the opportunity was there, especially in AZ where the trails are plentiful. More people off roading = more demand for after market parts, more demand = more availability.

Agreed 100 percent. One thing I wish jeep would do away with, the CVT. I hate it. I would love to have a small transfer case or a super low range 7th gear in the new trans for the fdii

Sorry bro, I don't swing that way, but thanks for the complement. Ha ha ha. I'm anxiously awaiting a 2014 to arrive so I can try the pat with a real tranny.

FujativeOCR 03-23-2013 01:21 PM

I was starting to feel lonely hating on the cvt all by myself.

Ha ha. Was one of the main reasons I unloaded mine. However, if I had my time back I would have traded my Mazda 5 in against my jku instead of the pat.

Gramps 03-24-2013 05:23 AM

There are only about 15% of ppl with 4X that actually go off road anyway, most are mall crawlers. This forum has a section for clubs although I don't really see any listings in it anymore. We also have a four Wheeling section that is set up by region - http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f4/ If you wanted to start one for the MK's I would be happy to find an area in JF for you and see what could be done.

KLRJEEPER 03-24-2013 05:46 AM

Best thing is to find a few people who like to wheel regardless of rig. I find politics get in the way with clubs. Just get a bunch of people who wheel and get out there. Take lots of pics

Gramps 03-24-2013 05:52 AM

2X that! The best way to educate is to indoctrinate others to what the MK's can do. There are pictures of a Compass pulling a Wrangler out of the Badlands.

KLRJEEPER 03-24-2013 06:05 AM

Yep. The pats are the most capable in class and more capable than most other SUV's in the market today.

aroundincircles 03-24-2013 08:30 AM

yeah, a typical Jeep club does not have a good attitude towards the MK, and when I go out, the groups I've gone out with have been pretty cool, but getting a group together was not easy... and I was by far the lowest man on the totem pole. it would be nice to go out with a group of patriots that had similar capabilities.

Too bad you never lived here. More than welcome, if you get stick/hung up, I would happily winch ya out and continue.

man, I would love to go jeeping in Cananda... ROAD TRIP!

We have literally thousands of kms of trail here. I love it. Most of it is pat friendly too. I have a converted bus to camper in the bush for a relax area. Its awesome.

crhawk 03-24-2013 01:22 PM

I've taken my pat offroad a few times. The only problem is finding some good tires, Im still using road tires. Me and my brother went through some muddy trails, he ended up getting stuck with his wrangler (also road tires) . I tried to pull him out and ended up stuck myself >.< luckily my friend has a 4runner on 33's so he was able to yank us out.

If anyone in NC wants to hit some trails around wake county, i'd be down.

aroundincircles 03-24-2013 01:56 PM

I run Falken Rocky mountain tires LOVE THEM. they have been great off road. I'm lifted, and I have 1.25" spacers, so I fit the biggest tires I could 245/65-17's

Discount has a thread on here where they fit some tires on my patriot on 15" rim that you would not have to do a lift or spacers and get a good off road tire on there.

On my wrangler I am running 2" of lift with 285 cooper st maxx tires. Great combo for our type of driving. My stock sr-a were complete junk, 3 flats in one dirt road trip. My pat was stock as far as running gear goes. And it wheeled good. Besides tires that is. Sr-as are garbage.

Gramps 03-25-2013 05:48 AM

Yes the SR-a are pretty sad to be using the Wrangler name. My wife had those on her '06 GC and they don't even like snow! She does drive pretty fast so I got her some 245/65-17 SilentArmours and they hold the road just great. She doesn't off-road and wants stuff to keep her on the road and these do a wonderful job of that! They do make a couple of sizes that would fit on 15 or 16 in rimes but they may be over priced by comparison to others out there. There is no substitute for great tires!!

KLRJEEPER 03-25-2013 06:01 AM

for sure...I was rotted at the amount of flats I had using the SR-A. both the pat and wrangler I got a bunch of flats. as soon as I got the replacement tires from goodyear because they were literally new tires, 200 kms on them when I got the flats, they replaced them free, I traded them on my 285 coopers...happy camper ever since. they are great compared to the goodyear. I have seen the sidewalls of duratrac and MT/Rs blow out too....im staying away from goodyear for good.

Im working on the wife to get a new pat when the new trans comes out!

Gramps 03-25-2013 06:37 AM

Just like the Firehawks from Firestone are junk there are some great Firestone's out there - Destination A/T's quickly come to mind :) They all have their cheap price leaders and the SR-A's are Goodyear's. The SR-A's that were on the wife's allowed her Jeep to slide down the drive way when she was parked overnight. It is NOT a steep driveway at all, < 5% grade. The tires just got cold and hard during the winter and a little ice just let it slide. I've never had that happen before but the GC's are a heavier rig. And yes it was in park and not slipping out of gear, that's the first thing I checked.

A day much like today. It was warm enough that the first snow flakes turned to ice, expanded and raised the tires and down hill she went. :(

KLRJEEPER 03-25-2013 11:33 AM

yes...but the sidewall blow outs are their premium AT and MT tread. thats the scary part. I will never lace my jeeps with Goodyear because of that....my family is to important to me to put that on my rigs.

Doing some plastidip around my fenders. more pics to follow.

aroundincircles 03-27-2013 03:36 AM

Done, Love the way it looks, but need some tips from a plastidip guru on how to get the tape off after you're done. the edges are rough at best....

KLRJEEPER 03-27-2013 06:17 AM

Nice....I was thinking about doing the same thing but with bedliner.

Now you need a nice set of off road wheels and some more AT hybrid tires to finish the muscular off road look!.

LKWJEEPER 03-30-2013 05:31 PM

I'd tear the tape off before it dried.

aroundincircles 03-31-2013 07:35 AM

Went out to 4peaks area, and took a couple of trails with my brother in his 4runner, and Jeepcreeps01 (John)

"Score" the edge of the tape with a toothpick between coats and remove the tape before the last coat drops.

Bad vid I took:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3fjgAKEqL4

This is out at sycamore creek, we took a side creek that was marked. it was labled as easy and "fun" but yeah... this part was interesting. this video was before I got out and took a better look, and went further over to the drivers side. The video doesn't do it justice, it was very steep and I was slidng down hill a bit.

if anybody was curious this is the trail we took:

Yea...it's kind of annoying to have to repost sh*t to 4 different forums :| Two of them are old forums that I don't take part in at all anymore but I enjoy the build a few build threads and then the last one is the Patriot one. This one...as far as MKs go...isn't the greatest but for most everything else it's pretty good! I like the JK section.

This would be sweet to have a whole forum/club/FB group dedicated to only FDII owners! But it would take forever to take off...
