31 Avg MPG last weekend

Just wanted to let everyone know, with gas prices at record highs and all.

I couldn't believe it at first, but I actually pulled down 31 mpg on a mostly freeway trip 3 hours north for Memorial weekend. Its a 5 speed 4x4, and we kept our speeds below 70 mph, which made a huge difference overall (since 70 mph means 3K RPMs with the stick). On the way home we were even hauling 200+ lbs of fieldstone, and that mileage was despite the added weight... who knows, maybe next time I can get 32.......?

When combined with the 28 mpg my wife gets in the normal city commute, we continue to be impressed with this vehicle.

Was this all downhill with the engine off? I drive MOSTLY highway to/fro work daily, and get around 17. I would imaging with NO city driving, I MIGHT get 19-20, but nowhere NEAR 31. You must have stock tires and Miradona's Hand of God pushing you along......

Excellent! The 5 speed makes a big difference. The best I can squeeze out of the CVT is 28.1....

This was calculated with the calculator on my cell phone, since I don't have the EVIC option... I attribute the great mileage to going 65-67 mph the whole time. Going over 70 would have killed the mileage for sure.

I drive 55 and don't get near that. I think the calculations are off somewhere personally, no offense. TJ's just don't get that kind of mileage.

It would be akin to a Geo Metro getting 75-80 mpg.....just doesn't happen.

I drive an '08 Sport w/4x4 and the CVT, bought new in Nov. '07 and now has about 16k miles. In general, my gas light comes on after about 280 miles and I typically get fuel every 300 - 310 miles. When I fill up, it generally comes to about 11.5 - 12.5 gallons (which, I believe leaves a little room to spare).

With all this in mind, we typically get between 25 - 27 mpg for each fill up, with about 90% of our driving being highway at 70 mph.

It may not be great mileage but is actually better than I expected :-)

Sorry, just looked at his tag and all I saw was his TJ. I was insanely jealous of someone getting that mileage.....I was going to try to track him down and swap jeeps in the middle of the night (anyone know how to get that VIN plate off??).

Still wouldn't trade my TJ in for anything....but wouldn't mind having BOTH (as long as the wife has the Compass/Patriot).

Yeah, I WISH that was my TJ! Best I have ever done in that is 21 mpg, again keeping it under 70mph and its a 4 banger...

My wife drives the Patriot most of the time, I alternate between a Plymouth Neon daily driver (34-36 mpg), and the TJ as a 3rd vehicle for the nice sunny days (like today).

Unless you guys have the FDII option, I don't know why you all are getting such crappy mileage, especially if you have a 2x4 one! I am at 30 MPG right now, down from 32 on my 2.4L R/T CVT 2x4.

The 5-speed makes a huge difference

I now have 34,000 mi. on my Compass 4X2 5-speed, have not had it a year. I mostly have all highway mileage. I'm car pooling with one other person my fuel economy is seldom less than 30mpg! I have the EVIC, I think it's very accurate the lowest I have seen it dip anytime recently was a momentary reading of 28.8 traveling over a mountain top. It bounced right back when heading down the other side. My mileage right now according to the EVIC is 31.8. I have checked it a fill-ups. I still get routinely around 31 Mpg. The last tank full I that calculated I went 414 miles on the tank full!
I will say I have the K&N cold air intake kit. I use nothing but synthetic motor oil and I changed the stock NGK sparkplugs at 30,000 as stated in the owners manual. I switched to the NGK Iridium sparkplugs. This all does help to get the most from the engine.

My 2007 Compass 5speed 4x4 has 3100 miles on it and I still only get average of 23-24 even on highway.

Outstanding fuel mileage!

I almost always average over 30Mpg from my compass. I've been here before saying I have a Compass Limited 4X2 5-speed. I see no reason why everyone can't seem to get 30MOG+ from the 5-speeds. I've have called Chrysler and told them about my great gas mileage. I haven't checked it real recently to just now. The Evic reads 32.3MPG right now. I haven't reset the EVIC in months. I decided to set the trip to keep track of mileage at last fill-up, just to check against what the EVIC reads. I reset the trip and just drove 370.6 mi. I squeezed every drop of gas I could get into tank. The gas pump said 11.19 gallons. Doing the math thats 33.11MPG average for the tank full! I think that about normal. I've driven over 400mi on a tank. Cosidering that the Compass has a 13.5 gallon tank, I could've gone 400mi on this most recent tank.
I'm currently commuting 63mi. one-way to work. I'm traveling over a mountain, through some city traffic, and about 16mi. of 4-lane highway. The roads aren't real great and speed limits are 55 max on all the roads.
If your not getting 30MPG+ from the 5-speed your not driving right.
