2008 Patriot Fuel Pumping Problem

The pump at the gas station keeps shutting off before gas tank is filled. Took it to dealer who installed new fuel filler neck. Same problem. Took it back today and was told the valve at the gas tank does not work and that a piece of it has fallen into the gas tank. 1) Is it safe to drive the Patriot with a piece of valve in the gas tank? 2) Does it sound like the dealer knows what the problem really is? 3) Any ideas of what could really be the problem?

greygoat,

I'm sorry to hear about your fuel tank concerns. In regards to the dealer diagnosis, your Service Adviser and technician will be able to elaborate on the evidence indicating the valve location.
You may also follow-up with the Service Manager as well.

The fuel tank vent is plugged or has disentigrated and clogged itself. Mine does this as well, I have to set the pump to the second click and eek the fuel in slowly.
