2008 Jeep Compass main brake lights not working.

The 3rd high mount lamp does come on when brakes are pressed, the two side lights do not. Turn on night lights and the two side lights do turn on, but do not illuminate more when brakes are pressed. I am guessing the lights are okay, could it be a fuse issue? Should I replace the lights and see if that works?

rjtneilson,

I'm sorry to hear about your brake lamp concerns. In addition to a possible bulb concern, is possible your symptom may be related to the brake lamp switch as well.

The side lights are not the same as the brake lights. In some cars, the side light might still work but the brake light part of the bulb doesn't work. It seems odd that both sides are out at the same time. I would think the brake switch that activated the third brake light is working correctly since it did activate the third brake light. I would start with the easiest and cheapest fix by replacing the bulbs on each side.

I did replace each bulb and works fine now, must have been the problem. The bulbs looked to have partially burnt out. Glad it was easy fix and not the brake switch or other.
Thanks for the suggestions and help!
