2008 Compass subframe rot

I just bought a 2008 Compass with 61,000 miles on it. I looked underneath when I was looking at it prior to buying it and noticed the subframe has surface rust but didn't think anything of it.

Now I've seen some complaints of total subframe rot on 2007 and 2008 models in Canada and salt belts like the state I live in (Vermont).

Has anyone else in salt belts experienced this problem?

Our '08 is fine. It lives in the lake effect snowbelt of NW PA.

Thanks! Do they use salt on your roads in that area?

Tons. My garage floor is slowly disintegrating from the salt!

Well, I just had it Vermont State inspected at a Jeep dealership and it passed so I guess it should be fine for a few years anyway.

There is an extended rust warranty on '07 models. Maybe your '08 is part of that??

http://www.thecarconnection.com/news...ranty-for-rust

You can slow that existing rust down with an oil spray like Krown, Rust Check, Corrosion Free, etc..

Yeah, I checked out that website earlier and it seemed to be restricted to the 07 models, though if mine had the issue, I would call the number to see if my 08 was applicable.

This summer, I'm going to take a wire brush to the existing surface rust and apply some anti-rust material like you described.

I'm also thinking of putting a front skid plate on the compass after I treat the K frame. I believe they are around $150.00 for the skid plate but not sure of the extent of work involved to attach it.

The rear wheel arches on our 08 are completely rotted out. I've never seen a vehicle this new suffer from such severe body rot. The floor pans are solid, as is the rest of the tub, just the external sheet metal. I have owned it since 41000 miles and I religiously wash my cars in the winter, to the point of risking pnemonia. Either the previous owner parked this turd in a salt brine bath or Chrysler used Lancia's steel broker.

How many miles on your 08 Compass now? Any other problems with it?
