2007 patriot 2.4l sometime wants to start but doesn't

I just replaced the battery a month ago. Double checked the grounds....all good. I will turn the key and it wants to start up but sputters out and dies. It' not the type of not starting like an alternator problem or battery problem (click, click, click). It has plenty of electrical juice. Any ideas or anyone elses do this. The jeep has 40k on the clock and it perplexes me.

It boils down to either spark or fuel.

You have juice from the battery but is it getting to the plugs?

Fuel - bad pump, filter or injector?

Does it eventually start? If it does get it to some place that can pull the codes.

it's not throwing any codes at all. Plugs are good and spark is there. Also i have replace the air filter when I did the battery. It's wierd because it does it intermittently. I can never tell when it is going to do it.

My friend's Volvo was doing something very similar. Turned out to be a defective starter. Some engines are picky about the starter getting them up to full speed.

No I haven't replaced the battery in the key at all since she got the jeep. As far as the starter it's cranking fine I have done quite a bit of work to jeeps in the past which is why I am thinking fuel is the problem but the not producing error codes thing is throwing me off. (carb jeeps)(cjs)

I'm suggesting that you replace the battery in the key for what little it costs. The little chip in the key can do weird things to the security system.

Yes it could be the battery in the key is low and not letting it communicate with the Sentry System. It's a cheap fix if that's it. The surfaces on the battery also build up oxidation and maybe just a cleaning could help.

Make sure all the fuses are seated correctly...this was a cause of no starts on the compass when we had it.

All Jeeps have the Sentry Key, that's what I was referring to, not the alarm system. There is a battery powered chip in it that communicates with the SCREEM that allows it to start. I understand that the 12v main battery is new and shouldn't be the problem. Re-seating the fuses inside the TIPM may help too as 07compasssport mentioned.

well did the key change deal and that was and is not the problem. I am having her run some fuel system cleaner through it to see if that help after two tanks full of gas. It apparently only does it when it is cold. So if the fuel injector cleaner doesn't work I will probably drop the fuel tank to check out the punp because that is what makes the most sense that could be bad possibly due to gas being so ****ty these days with ethanol.
