2007 Jeep Compass RPM Took Off

Hello
I was driving my 2007 jeep compass today and all of a sudden the RPM shot up to 6000 rpm and then bogged down to idle and wouldn't accelerate anymore luckily i was able to get off the highway and get it to a gas station and shut it off. After i let the jeep cool down i tried restarting it and all it would do is a clicking sound. Any ideas what might be the problem?
