2007 Compass Starter Motor Problems
Just wondering if anyone is having trouble with the starter motor in their compass. I already had one replaced and is looking like I will need another one soon. The starter keeps cranking when you turn the engine off. the first one went up in smoke and my new one is starting to do the same thing again.

That might be directly related to the Totally integrated Power module (TIPM). I tried to install some real HID headlight bulbs on my compass and because they run on different voltage than normal bulbs, the computer went crazy!!! I would turn the truck off and take the key out... and the starter motor kept running!!!! It would keep spinning the motor for about 30 seconds then stop. I plugged the stock headlights back in and have had no problems since.
Bottom line....have you changed anything on your Compass that you can think of??? Headlight bulbs, taillight bulbs, fog lights, etc that might have changed voltage outputs? All these parts are directly wired into this TIPM and when a different voltage is present, the thing will act crazy...from experience.

The only other advice i can give is to check out all of your fuses. Make sure you don't have one that is blown or loose.
Good Luck. I hope you get it straightened out.

Dearler installed the TIPM today only to find out that the starter is bad also. I was told on Monday it was not my starter and it was the TIPM so I assumed they checked my starter also. Now I have to wait anotrher 3 days for them to get a new starter. Incompitent idiots.

Hi
KD2008 has posted in the KJ forum (perhaps gramps will move it here) he also has start motor fault and they also tell him he needs a new TIPM and it was because of his HID head lights. Can’t see that myself but I guess he has to pay for his repair, I wonder if he will also need a new start. Regards, Merlin

From experience, installing HID's on a Patriot or Compass is a very bad idea....you will have issues with the starter. The communication from the lights to the TIPM is different. The TIPM is expecting a certain voltage when you turn on your headlights....the HID's output is alot less and the TIPM recognizes this and goes crazy. I had to keep the headlights stock....bottom line...HID's = bad news in a Patriot or Compass....we are already starting to see some costly repairs here because of this.

Yeah...your situation is definitely odd. I was responding to merlinTec's post above with my last post. BTW, has the dealership given you any insight on why this has been happening? Causes of the problem? I know you said it was a bad TIPM and that was replaced...i'm just curious to see if a new TIPM fixes your starter issue. Keep us updated. Thanks

Sorry to take so long on finding the HID thread but here it is. HID kit problem on Compass. I haven't a clue as to what's going on with yours, just trying to offer info.
