Wrangler Unlimited CRD Sighting, and pics

Hey guys, I've lurked around for a bit but don't have a Jeep yet . I'm currently driving a Dakota but am planning on getting an Unlimited Wrangler once it's out. Anyways thought I would share, although it looks like an export model, it was on I-94 in Chi-town so I grabbed some shots. Although there were some unahppy motorists. Enjoy. Sorry for them being so big...

So we all know at least at this point that the U.S. is not going to get the diesel engine. But has anyone heard a good reason why?? If the freakin Liberty has it how could it hurt DC to offer it for the JK in the U.S.? It makes no sense to me.

everything i have read is because of emissions, the liberty CRD is being axed as well. just wish it wasn't so hard to get an export model say in canadia or ol me-hico and bring it back across the line.

Jeep crd

If the Liberty crd is axed,why is Dr.Z still advertising it?I just saw it on tv the other day.

It is going to be arounf for export starting NOW... hopefully we get it in the states at some point during the model run. 2009 most likley...

Heading off to europe. If you have any connections you can snag one before it is exported... but that is very rare. Also you would have to spend big bucks to get it to meet rgulations here and such... My uncle has a RHD CJ-8 that he snagged back in the day... basicly the rarest Jeep I have ever seen. But he worked at the plant that they where made at.

not an expert. but if its not EPA certified for US it would have to be certified before it could be 'released' from customs or whatever entitiy holds it as you try to bring it back in.

to get EPA certification on a vehicle, a government certified or licensed or whatever entitiy would have to perform the modifications/certifications. Seems like I heard that such companies have to be certified for specific vehicles. In other words you cannot take a CRD jeep to someone who does ferraris if that does not have qualifications for diesel jeeps.

i have been somewhat interested in mercedes smart vehicles. there are a few, perhaps one place in the US currently that performs mods to smarts that makes them OK for US importation. i heard this on a board where someone wanted to bring one in from europe or canada and was tyring to find out how.

btw it is very expensive to go through the process.

finally your best bet, and still really expensive, might be to take a gas jeep and purchase a diesel drivetrain and have a very competent mechanic covert it for you. of course this will cost you mega bucks too. and then you must be aware of what your local smog laws are. do you need to get resmogged once a year? if so, how you gonna do that with a diesel?, temp convert back to gas? or you move to a state/county/city where they don't smog vehicles...

if fuel costs keep up, i expect to see clean diesel vehicles start to pick up in 2008/2009. perhaps an effort to get congress to ease diesel pollution laws would help too. since ultra-low sulfur content diesel will be nationwide by the end of oct, the only thing sticking in the epa craw is the particulate issue...

My mom has a CRD Liberty. Why was it axed? Some bugs to work out?
