So I know this has been asked before and I have searched a few posts and have some questions about lighting and wiring on the newer Jeeps with canbus.
I got my 2015 JKU last Oct. Told myself take a year to enjoy it then I can start with some small mods etc. I have a habit of going over the top with things. Donít we all when it comes to a Jeep
Also had some health issues that kept me from doing work on it so it was good to read and then read some more posts.
Topic question/ background info:
I am looking to add some AUX lighting. On and off road etc. I drive a lot of back roads and I want to be nice to people when I am using them. I hate the lifted trucks that have the light right in my eyes and a blue or over the top bright. Not sure how they get away with them. 38 or 35s on a full size P/U puts the light right in my windshield.
I only want some supplemental lights as there are wild boar and gators on these roads and I want to see them in advance so I can avoid them.
Not to mention the roads flood out a lot so I want to see the puddles before I blast into them and into a ditch. Speed on this particular road is 55 and everyone does 80+ stupid. Sorry I digress.
I am also looking into a new front bumper that will take the factory fogs as I like the look. Or at the very least take lights I can use the factory switch for them.
I know long term the front bumper will need a winch mount. I looked at the RR one
And I like the look and the fact you can add to it over time. But it is $$$.
I donít want a stubby but a full with. I like the angled ends either storage or otherwise but I think this might add some weight. But then I also like the open air look of the tube attachment they have. Being modular would at least let me decide what I liked better.
But for the right price I did see some others I liked on another post. Also a simple angle iron painted black with D rings could work too. No winch.
I like the sarge Jeep.
As I have the TANK green this might look good on it.
I would not mind a hidden winch mount one as it would allow for more airflow on the 100+ days we get in FL over the radiator. I do not want to create any cooling issues long term.
The rear bumper will remain stock for some time and will most likely just get something to match the front. I only plan on 33 so I donít see a big swing out as being needed.
Just some background info for what my questions are for lighting and use will be long term.
I am mechanically inclined but a bit shy with electric on newer cars.
In my other Jeeps they were much simpler. The computers and things in this new JKU scare me a bit and I do not want to fry a computer.
I have always run my own harness to keep it a separated from the factory one as much as I can.
With that said I do want something that is ignition powered so I do not kill my battery. Maybe a master switch feeding an AUX fuse box? Instead of all circuits being tied in separately to ignition on.
What is a good circuit to use for this?
My plan would be to run a main power off the battery to a fuse block (marine grade) then feed all the lights winch etc off of that. What size wire for the main feed would be best to use? 8G and should I put an inline 30A or something like that fuse to be safe?
1. Any good place to mount the fuse box that people have found? I would like to keep it under the hood to keep it simpler to wire.
2. With LED lights do I need to run a relay to first trigger the light?
Power from switch energizes the relay then that trigger the LEDs. I used this a lot with my HELLA and my KC 100W lights in the past. I donít think I need those with all these new LED lights.
3. I know the winch will need one a relay long term. Maybe a 2nd battery at the time if funds allow.
4. Right now as you can see from the picture here I only have 2 small LED lights under the bumper. I was playing around with placement until I get my new bumper.
I ran some wires from the driver side back into the cab. Popped the access panel off and ended them in there for now.
5. This brings me to my next question. Good switch placement. I do not want an A pillar pod. I donít need lighted switches in my face while driving.
So I am thinking either right or left of the steering column on the plastic panel there. Or is there an easy way to put it into the center console? I would like to retain my factory netting and I have the heated seat option so there is not room in the factory area to put a switch or 2.
6. Also I am looking for good quality switches. Not the one you find at the local walie world or AutoZone. Some of those donít look that long lasting. I may go to West Marine and get some waterproof ones. I have also been looking at Amazon. So any suggestions you have and how long you had them etc. like them whatever is appreciated.
I plan to run some lights on the back too. Just one mocked up here.
Still looking into placement on stock bumper. Input appreciated on this too.
Sorry for the long post. I was just hoping to give you as much info as I could right away.
If you think I over looked something please let me know.
