When did JK get upgraded rear axle

I think that in 2008 the JK got the upgraded rear axle on all models. Why was this? Were they having problems with the axles in the 07s? Should I stay away from an 07 with the standard axle?

The early 07's came with the Dana 30 or 35, can't remember which off of the top of my head. They're very rare though. The good thing about the 07's is that if it's an Auto with a dana 44, it's got 4.10's.

rear axle is the same. As mentioned, the early '07 models had a D35 rear. But that was short lived- only some of the ones with a build date in '06 have them. IIRC December '06 builds is when they switched to D44 for all models.

Yes- if you wheeled it, you were probably going to grenade it. It didn't take long for Jeep to realize it was a big mistake.

A friend of mine has an '07, 6 speed, 4.10 gears. He bought it off the lot, not special ordered.

Sure they used to get away with it but the 35 just wouldn't stand up to the increased HP and torque of the 3.8 I had to!

Yeah- that was one of the mistakes they learned from the TJ

So then maybe this is a dumb question but chalk it up to being a Jeep newbie... why is the D35 unsuitable for the rear axle but still suitable for the front axle? You have to get the Rubicon to get a D44 front axle. Unless it just has to do with the duty rating and that the rear axle is always engaged versus the front axle only part-time.

They don't use it in the front either. The front is a Dana 30 on all JK's except Rubis.
