Remember to show pics of the install or we will hunt you down cut you’re tires.
Where else would one put an air tank? The dimensions on a 2.5 gal tank are 6.5 x 23. Thats a 6" diameter tank plus a bit for the bracket. I have not been able to find a smaller OD tank. A couple of 4 to 4.5" diam tanks mounted side by side would be sweet. My concern with the evap was not ripping it off only but damaging it and having the computer reduce engine power because of the damage. The evap cannister is plastic and is held on to it's bracket by 3 slide on tabs. A stout air tank firmly bolted to the frame could take much more abuse. And if it was damaged so what; the Jeep will still run.

I'm open for suggestions as to where else to mount a tank. Plumbing it in to the PP will be no problem as I have access to all necessary fittings.

I can’t say for sure where to mount it because I’m not at that point yet in my mods. I would think that maybe where some people are relocating the muffler about mid-ship inside the frame rails on the left side is an excellent place. As for the mounting bracket welded to the air tank, if it’s keeping you from tucking it up out of the way, you could cut it off and weld on your own custom bracket to make it fit. I still think that mounting it in the place of your evap canister is a bad idea. You say if it gets damaged what does it matter, it’s just an air tank. Well that air tank cost money too plus with it hard mounted you will get hung up on it with a just a moderate break-over situation. For me, I just look at the spot where the evp canister was at, and think of that spot as non-existing.
On my ’04 Rubi I mounted it inside the Jeep on the back left side finderwell. It was out of the way and that particular place was a blind spot anyway. Later, when I built my roof rack, I mounted outside on the rear of the rack. So in other words, take your time and get creative. Again, good luck.

X2, I was even thinking of a custom air tank... Maybe a rectangular tank made for the old muffler location.

Or of someone would make a roll cage that was hollow and sealed that would serve as an air tank. Another option is to make an air tank out of their bumper.

See, creative thinking. Look out of the box. Great ideas guys.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked around, sat starring, laid under on the concrete and went to sleep, yes sleep and so on just trying to come up with a good idea so as to make things fit and not to look like a hack-job on this and my other Jeeps. I’ve learned years ago (from my uncle George) that there is always a way to do things. Some of course much harder than others.

Old 1980's pickup truck trick...

How about building a rear bumper out of whatever material you prefer. Pipe bumper or large tubing. Then make it into an air tank by sealing it up.
