very impressed with my 2012 JKUR towing a 4k lb boat

Hey guys I have about 4200 miles on my wifes 2012 JKUR. We went with the 3.73 gears as it worked the best for our needs. In the last month we have towed almost 1000 miles with the Rubi and our boat which is about 4400lbs. I installed the Mopar 7pin wire harness to work with the factory surge brakes. This little pentastar has done great. Im averaging about 11.5-13mpg towing the boat depending on speeds. Im surprised how well the pentastar/tranny works towing and does it effortless. Anyone debating what a wrangler can or cant tow Im confident in mine and it does it pretty easily.

when did they raise the tow rating to over 3500 pounds?

I imagine that the trailer has a five pin plug the extra being for reverse so when you're backing the trailer up it doesn't allow the brakes to lock up.

Could be. I've seen only the type with a disable pin for reverse.

Factory boat trailer has 7 pin hookup(for reverse lights, and so brakes dont lock up in reverse)

That's an excellent point. I'm sure no one on the forum has broke any laws in their jeep or installed anything that would make it less safe than it was to begin with..

Going off roading is one thing. Towing a boat on a freeway with other drivers/families around is different. Either way, good to know your JKU towed well.

I guess I shouldn't have gone across the CAT scales at 11,000 GCW in my Jeep Liberty towing a flatbed with a load a few times? Oops..

If the JKU had a diesel engine, I'd tie even more than that onto the back of this thing...it's WAY more heavy duty and stable than a KJ. The ONLY thing that holds the JKU back from being the best tow rig in the entire Jeep lineup is the fact that the hitch mounts to a crossmember instead of mounting down both frame rails.

I'm not convinced that's the limiting factor.
The boxed cross member is welded to the frame rails, so the load ends up at the same place as a hitch that's bolted to the rails. The tow rating isn't based on the class of hitch installed.

Just about anything can pull it and get it going.

Controlling the load is the most important thing. Stopping it. Maneuvering it. Keeping it behind the vehicle.

Just because you "can" tow it doesn't mean you "should" tow it.

But I do agree that the long wheelbase JKU is probably an underrated tow vehicle.
