I can say that since I joined the forum I saw about 100 or so questions about proper BS, it has to be 4.5" to fit right and not rub, so if a 4.0" rubs, how will the 3.75" do???? It will rub!
If I'm wrong, I'll gladly stand corrected. Until then, I'm 99% positive that the rule of thumb is that aftermarket 15" wheels with 4.25" of backspacing or less is what fits. 4.25" requires grinding of the stock caliper and may rub some components. 4.0" does or does not require grinding of caliper all depending on wheel style. 3.75" does not require grinding.
The less the back spacing, the farther away from the hub the tire sits.
Again, someone in the know please correct me if I'm wrong....and also answer my damn questions. LOL
Stock wheels have 6.25" backspacing. Months ago, I had 1.5" spacers to make the stock wheels "poke out" of the fenders. Now I have new wheels with 4.5" backspacing without spacers, and the wheels stick out of the fenders. Less backspacing = tires stick out further.
Taken from another source:
"Backspacing is the measurement from the hub mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel."
"Typically speaking, the higher the offset/backspace, the more the wheel will tuck inwards towards the suspension or away from the fender.
The lower the offset/backspace, the more the wheel will push out away from the suspension or towards the fender."
Assuming the same wheel widths, 3.75" will stick farther outward of the wheel well.
FYI, the stock Rubi wheels have a 44.45mm (1.75") offset, which places the center of the wheel/tire pretty close to halfway between the front wheel bearing races.
worse handling, probably... but aired-down 15's will have better traction with more rubber on the ground.
goldenglory, your fitting on backspacing is right. i took a risk with 4"BS because 3.75" was out of stock and ended up having to grind the calipers slightly.
i think the stance with 4"BS is on the threshold of looking a little goofy, but i'm not sure how much of a difference 0.25" will make. compared to some of the stances i've seen on a lot of modded TJs, i think the .25" difference in backspacing would be insignificant.
