Transfer case shifting issue
I bought a 2011 Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon last week & have one issue on which the dealer is proverbially clueless. The transfer case shifter will not shift from 2H into 4H when the jeep is not moving; it works fine as soon as it’s in gear and rolling. Thre is only 89 miles on it. The owner’s manual clearly states that this shifter should work either when stopped or moving. What could be causing the problem, or is it a problem?
New to this Forum and haven’t had a chance to use the Jeep yet as work has taken over my life for the last ten days. I’ll post more interesting items after I’ve been in the saddle awhile.

It's possible when stopped the splines are not lining up.
Not an indication of anything wrong.

I always shift while moving too...it works much easier. Many times mine won't shift either if I am not at least rolling a bit...

Same here on shifting while moving, its all about getting the splines to line up. In fact, 4WD Hi can be shifted on the fly up to 55 mph.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new Jeep.
Like the others stated, it’s normal, especially since everything is nice and tight. Now go get that owners manual.

Your transfer case in the JK Wrangler is a non sycronous transfer case. As what other members' mentioned , the splines must line up or the transfer case will not engage, forcing it will leave you with a broken linkage, if it does not want to engage, do not force it, just drive up a little and it should be a smooth transition.
Hope this helps

Thanks for the responses. The dealer did get back to me today with a version of "they all do that". I'm going just drive it and not be concerned.
I do have the manuals and DVD; I copied the DVD onto a flash drive to for easy ready on my laptop in the garage. For those that didn't get a DVD, both manuals (Guide & OM) can be downloaded from the jeep.com site. After reading them completely, I do believe I know more about Wranglers than the salesman.
This is my 3rd jeep and spent late into the morning over last weekend (major blizzard going on outside) in my garage detailing it and learning what I could. As an engineer, of course I started taking it apart. Very interesting.
Already received an order from Quadratech; decided on some MOPAR accessories like front bumper, taillight guards, and front skid plate, Warn 9.5ti winch, etc. I’ll post some photos when I’m done.

I had and have the same problem. You will also notice that your lockers don't disengage after you try to disengage them. I have found that shifting from 2H to 4H is getting easier. 4Lo is the tough one. Owners manual says to roll at 2-3 mph and shift. You can try that but every time I've done it I get nothing but grinding. I found the best way to do it is try to shift, if it doesn't go do not force it, simply put it back in the last state and drive forward a few inches, then try again.
