tire pressure monitoring system

just bought a set of 17x9 wheels and 35" km2's......how will that affect that system? what do I have to do? I just realized this after ordering the wheels. is there anything I have to swap out of the factory wheels and tires to the new set? anything? I am pretty new to the Jeep thing and my Jeep only has 230 miles on it! I don't want to mess anything up on it

your factory wheels have tire pressure monitors in them which is a sensor built into the valce stem . you'll need to swap this over to your new wheels as long as they will mount to the new ones and make sure your tire pressure is set correctly. the worse that will happen is you will have a tire pressure light on

so even if i transfer the monitors from the old to the new, i will still get that light on the dash? do I have to get the sensors re-calibrated for the much larger tires? Thanks in advance for the help!

Tire size won't change how the sensors work. Pressure is pressure. A larger tire with more air volume won't change how it works.

Just one piece of additional advice... Don't use metal valve stem caps.. Only plastic or TPMS approved.... There is a "galvanic" effect with the valve stem and the caps will corrode shut.
(Next step, they cannot be removed, vise-grips, broken TPMS. Hence, $ 40.00 to replace.. )

Check out this thread as well...

USAntigoon is soooo right on the valve caps. I know this first hand and you don't want to deal with that. Believe Me

Trust me on this and it's true. GET PLASTIC CAPS!!!!!!! I spent about two hours slowly grinding metal caps off all four of a friends valves because they were totally siezed up. PITA seriously, They look nice but get them off.

I'm glad I read this thread! My wife's JK is an '08, and we put my wheels & tires (an '07 without TPMS) on it last year. We did not move the TPMS just because of the hassle. But I'm taking it in this weekend to have it done finally. And she has some purty red metal caps on there right now. Guess I'll have to break the news to her that she'll need to ditch those.

I'm sure it does not happen to all metal caps out there but if you are the one that it does happen to it will suck big time

The TPMS valve stems are having a different alloy then the regular ones.. Keep in mind they act as a small antenna to give the monitor system a signal.. Aluminum will create a galvanic effect with the stem material particularly with the very tiny charge on the stem...

The caps I got with my new tires (where they replaced the TPMS sensors) looked like alu but where in fact plastic..
My suggestion... Get some nice plastic caps, take her favorite nail polish or buy some "purty red" and she will not even notice.. ( I hope)

N2rock, don't act funny once you buy this "purty red" nail polish...
