Third Row seat Installed!
Intalled today, only took about an hour.
Looks great, and the kids like the ride facing backwards..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I question the safety of third row seating mods.

I question why you wouldnt? Kids love that stuff. Although you now have no storage it is great for wheeling. As long as the seat is bolted down and you arent rear ended at high speed i dont see a safety issue.

![]() For $200-less installation (if you choose) what's there to question? Quote:
Seats are bolted to the frame as well as seatbelts. If you get rear ended I belive the car will pretty much be under the Jeep If not I'm sure an after market bumper like the PureJeep Bumper (hopefully mine will arrive in my lifetime ) will absorb the impact as well as the 35inch spare![]()

hmmmm... Looks neat & I can see the appeal. I have two little ones too, I don't think I could stomach the idea of them that far back, facing outwards. Personally i would think "Why not just buy a crossover 4x4 with 3rd row seating?" Seems like taking advantage of years of automotive evolutionary advancements (like airbags, impact/crumple zone, tempered glass etc etc)

I’m like Prot with the safety issue. I don’t really know for sure, but it seems that if you have a high speed frontal crash, god forbid, wouldn’t the little ones slip out of the seats and go flying toward the front since the seatbelts are working in reverse? Hopefully I’m wrong. Also, doesn’t the spare tire block most of the view? It does look like a cool mod for the kids though. Great for cruising around with friends and family too.

I must be the old guy on here at the age of 39. I remember sitting in my dad's station wagon back in the mid 70's with what I believe was reffered to as a "rumble seat" back in those ancient days. I was one of 4 boys and every weekend we would head to our beach house and outside of sometimes getting sick from the car ride, we fought over who was going to sit facing backwards. Half the fun was making faces at people behind us. Seat belts were an inconvenience. On mom's car someone would lay on that shelf where the speakers go by the rear glass. No one I knew got hurt or killed. Times were so much simpler then. Back to topic, I would love that 3rd row for kids but it would have to be an easy detach where you could just toss it on in a couple of minutes so I still had some room for stuff when needed. Prefer Richie's set up of facing forward but as far as 3 rows of seats it adds another whole dimension to the Jeep.

Hope for my hubby to get my 3rd row installed this weekend. The rear seat out of a TJ fits perfect and bought addtional lap belts. Plan on it going in foward facing. This means seating for 7 and I don't have to go back to Durango or would never consider mini-van. The way it's planned is to go in as the fold and tumble seat just as is works in the TJ. Can't wait...

I am curious as to whether or not the kids are getting higher amounts of exhaust fumes than normal, especially at slow speeds?

Key words in bold. I also wonder how this mod does with annual state inspection.

That's a great looking mod. I remember the rumble seat in the folks station wagon. Somehow we manage to survive through our childhood without the all of the modern feminized American micromanagement of required safety features and behavior. What will the men who have grown up under the safety NAZIs look like........... Back to the thread. What was the total cost for the seat and attachments?

Make sure the kid moves his bare feet before you slam that gate shut.
![]() He looked happy until the gate was shut and the huge spare tire blocked his view. ![]() Thats cool, but I wouldn't let my boys ride back there on the highway. Its bad enough having paper thin side doors. JMO |

Only issue I have with it is the seat belt. The belts aren't held in place by anything on the seatback, and they are anchored to the floor. If you're in an accident, the seat belt can cause the passenger's spine to compress, resulting in paralysis.....
