Swaybar disconnect = punctured tire
Was out running some trails today. Had the swaybar disconnected and strapped up out of the way with wire ties. While making a tight left turn (had the wheel turned all the way to the stops), the right wheel was off camber, maneuvering very slow. The swaybar punctured the sidewall of the tire
![]() ![]() ![]() We were lucky in that we had been in a lot of mud all day, but the spot where this happened was pretty solid- I was just getting ready to turn into some more water/mud. After we got the wheel changed, we started checking it out closely and determined that with the swaybar disconnected and tucked up as far as possible out of the way, and the wheel off-camber and turned to the stop in the opposite direction, the swaybar is pushed against the tire sidewall. It only occurs when the wheel is off-camber. This was a bit of an expensive lesson to learn being as the tire only has 3000 miles on it. Oh well- live and learn.

Sucks to lose a tire like that. On the good side you can finally get some off road tires!

Did you have the electronic front sway-bar disconnect that you can order from the factory or was it a manual after-market one that you installed? Just curious, I ordered the factory one and just wondering if it's something I need to watch out for. Thanks.

When we studied it, on level ground there was no rub. But any off-camber caused it to rub. Looks to me like I need to get some new rims with less off-set to set the tire out just a bit further.

Spare tire- what should I do
Had a little mishap wheeling yesterday- http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f96/swaybar-disconnect-punctured-tire-476021/
So now I have no spare tire. Obviously I need to rectify that. Looking online I see the Goodyear Wrangler (which is what is on the Jeep) is $163 (although the only one I find online is the "silent armor", and I'm betting that is not the same as the stock ones). But... I my ultimate plan is (once I wear out these stock tires) is to switch to a better off-road tire, like maybe a BFG MT. I only have 3000 miles on the stockers though. So my dilemma- do I go ahead and replace the spare with a Wrangler for $163 (so I still have a matching spare), or go ahead and replace the spare with a BFG. The real dilemma is that hopefully I will never need to use the spare. In which case the $163 would be wasted money. The BFG is a bit more money, but... If I do actually ever need to use the spare, it will be a mis-match. Opinions?

Man-- I'm so sorry to read that other thread. That sucks. Glad you made it out ok.
My input..... you'd better just go with a spare that matches for now. Hopefully you never have to use it, and maybe you can sell it as new later, but I'd go for the goodyear, myself. |

hmmmm... another option- I just check local craigslist, and there is someone listing 2 wheels (same rim and tire as my stock), $200 for the pair. I'm starting to think that since it is going to cost me around $200 for new (with mounting and balance), I might just buy that pair of tires, and then I have an extra "spare" in the garage.

If all 4 on your vehicle match, then get the bfg spare that you want. Depending on how long it takes to wear out your tires that spare may be dry rotted by the time you go to use it, but if not then you have 1 less tire to buy. If anything buy a jeep spare tire cover for it so no one can see that it is mismatched.
Or just sell all the good tires off your rig and get the bfg's you want, i can guarantee once you get over the initial cost you will not regret it

Man that does suck, but that's also why you have a spare. That's just how it goes when you go off-roading, and you just have to accept the fact that something may break when out playing. But when something does break it means that it is time to up-grade

1st was what happened, and serves more as a warning to others 2nd was asking for opinions on what I should do about replacing my spare. And really, that is more what I want opinions on at this point. Unfortunately you merged it with the swaybar thread, so now I'll get less (if any) opinions on replacing the spare ![]()
