Stuck in Neutral

I received a call from a relative earlier asking me what may be wrong with his jeep. He explained to me that he had put his '14 automatic rubicon in neutral in order to tow it behind a motorhome. Once he tried to take it out of neutral, it would not go back to 2HI, 4HI, or 4LO. When he started it would grind when he tried to put it in gear, but wouldn't engage. What might be causing this? Any suggestions are much appreciated, thanks!

Couple of questions. I just read my owners manual on towing mine which is an '11 but should be the same as a '14. A couple of things that were stressed, were that it not be towed on a dolly, meaning with only 2 wheels on the ground (front or rear), and that it only be towed in a forward direction with the transmission in park. Did he ensure/verify that the xfer case was in neutral? If any of these things were done/not done then severe damage could have been done to the xfer case.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, how do you have time to do it over.

have them put the tranny in neutral when switching the tcase out of neutral. that would eliminate some human error at least.
