I guess it all comes down to what you are after. In my case, I use an external Satellite Radio and IPod- I don't think I actually own a CD any more and our local radio stations are craptastic. I can go ahead and install new speakers and amps and connect directly to them, by-passing the stock head unit.

I have a 72 convertible Mustang which has the original 72 AM radio in it but there is a 'hidden' 3-amp two sub rig that nobody (other than by hearing it) would know existed. I likely will go that way in the Jeep. ...now... where to hide the amps...

Matt

"...where to hide the amps..." that is the question.

I bought my JK last night and have put 80 miles on it. My ears hurt listening to the stock system. Fortunately I have some nice components to put in. I have a nice Audiocontrol equalizer and my initial thought was to run the output from the factory headunit into the EQX and clean it up. But the h/u is so crappy, and space so limited, I am thinking of getting an okay Alpine unit (in case it gets lifted when the top is off) and just run it through a couple of two channel amps. my Diamond Audio HEX's have a third cross-over point for "Rear Accoustical Fill" which would be a 6.5" driver in the roll bar. I hate to say it, but probably no sub. Although I am wondering if there is enough volume in the STUPID storage well in the back of the JK that Jeep now feels a need to put in all of there vehicles.
(the one in my '06 WK is useless as a place for an amp or sub)

Actually, maybe I will put the EQX in the storage space and then put the amp under the front seats. Rear seats are normally out for the dogs.

are the infinity speakers crap, or just the signal they are getting from the headunit/amp?

Yes, blasphemy, but I need the room so I can't but a big box in the back...

I would think the speakers and amp are almost equally the weak link (with speaks winning at being a crapfest by a little). You might get a better sound with better speakers and the stock amp but putting a real amp in will definitely require new speakers.

I actually believe (given the existence of a line-out) that the stock headunit is 'adequate'.

Ya- I am in the same boat. Plus, with a softtop, it is just a matter or time before it is lifted by some punk. I have not even looked at the stock 'enclosure', maybe it can be of use (I doubt it).

I considered creating a custom box that will sit in the back and use the small storage reservoir for some of its airspace, then bolting the entire thing directly to the floor. But I still have the amp placement issue. I need the ability to 'hose out' the floors from time to time, in those cases, amps under the seats will not work.

SirGCal (a mod here) has a sub box built into his back seat. 33eng sells them as well (for the TJ's). you may be able to gut a little of the back seat and mount something there. that's what i'm going to be looking into when my rig finally gets here..
