Anyone know what the rear bumper is made of, and how thick is it (I assume it's 1/4-1/2" thick plastic/composite and hollow behind that)? I'm thinking about drilling into my bumper and wondering if there's enough material to hold a riv-nut (to mount my license plate & light).
Sorry. No, it's basically sealed. The area for the frame mounts is reinforced and has a brass insert. I was rather surprised at the rear bumper when I removed mine to install my Warn bumper. My guess this was one of the weight reduction items for CAFE standards?
Good news. I didn't remove the bumper, but felt around and determined that while the shell of the rear bumper seems big, it's indeed hollow inside, but there seemed to be enough material for me to try things out.
Drilled two holes in the rear bumper just a hair smaller than my largest rivnut. Used black Sharpie on the rivnut (since it was bright alum). Put some Gorilla Glue in each hole just to be sure. Crimped the rivnut down really tight (if you look, it barely deformed the area around the rivnut on the bumper, so I think it's going to hole amazing). Ran some LED license plate light (cheapie, which I may change). And mounted it all up. I can solidly crank down on the bolts holding the plate on and nothing is spinning. Am going to snag some diff bolts and blue loctite them later today.
Hopefully this concludes the cleaning up of my rear end.
