Stall Reversing Uphill

I have a JK Unlimited CRD 6spd manual which I cannot reverse up my driveway without stalling or reversing so fast I cannot keep control of it. I have owned manual diesel and petrol 4WDs in the past and never had this problem even when reversing campers up the driveway. Driving up forwards is fine. The only way I have found to be successful is to ride the clutch which I have done once. I don't like the idea of an early clutch replacement so I won't be doing that again. Has anyone else had this challenge?

In most traditional gear boxes the ratio for reverse is close to the second gear ratio. That means that it is easier to climb forward in first than to reverse on the same slope...I am not sure what axle ratio you have but a petrol JK with 3.21 takes a lot of clutch riding/coaxing just to start forward on a flat road, let alone reversing on a hill. Conversely, the crawling speed at idle in reverse is quite high, so even if the torque at idle is enough to keep you moving you still must ride the clutch. But then, this is a jeep and you can always use 4Lo

you may want to turn off your Hill Start Assistant also for the reverse climb.

You could always put in 4LO if you will be reversing in a straight line, that way you get it geared down a lot. Do not shift it into 4LO while reversing, but do it going forwards like normal, then after in 4LO, simply reverse.

Not trying to be a smart ***, but have you tried using the brakes? It seems with the clutch out you could use braking to keep it slow enough.

Reverse gear was a pain in the @$$ to me, even in a 2dr with 3.73 gears and small tires (28").

Maybe this tip will work for you, it did for me.

First, as Vin suggested, I turned off the Hill Start Assist.

Second, I went to a level parking lot and practiced gently letting in the clutch using 0 gas pedal (that is not even touching the accelerator pedal), first in 1st gear, then in reverse gear. (Prior to an '06 TJ and now a '10 JK, I never had a standard transmission that would maintain idle speed on level ground, much less going uphill!)

However, my JK will maintain idle speed in reverse uphill - though slower than on level ground. Motor Car states he has a problem with this, so I suspect there may be a variation in vehicles, though the lower your final gear ratio, the better off you are (how true is that?).

Third step was to practice letting in the clutch on a slight slope, then immediately entering an uphill slope - with 0 gas pedal. For me it was pulling in off the street, then starting at the foot and going up my concrete driveway (almost 2:1 in places) at idle speed in 1st gear, then in reverse gear - with no application of accelerator pedal. In reverse gear, as soon as I hit the steeper uphill slope, the idle speed immediately slows down to a crawl. The steeper the slope, it seems, the slower the crawl, but I haven't stalled out, yet. The idle seems to be self adjusting - mindboggling to a guy who learned to shift on a three speed Chevy tree w/o synchro. Can you say carburetor?

Downhill in either 1st or reverse it starts bucking. Obviously neutral is the solution there.

Don't try this with a hip hop station on 28+ volume, it can't be done. Also always remember, especially in the woods, to look at everything behind you on both sides of the vehicle before you back up (that may sound obvious to you but I conducted an expensive impact study with a pin oak in the TJ )

Should I "get a life"? Maybe, but I can't think of anything more fun than just messing around with my jeep or my boat, and it is too cold for boats in November, even in Georgia. Well maybe something...

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have tried 4LO but the driveway is an S bend and although it worked well it is not good for the trans on a rough concrete driveway with no slip. I will try disengaging the hill start assist and see if that helps. As far as using brakes goes it doesn't help. I need to be almost loosing traction to prevent it from stalling so braking doesn't help. I will also try the zero throttle solution from the bottom of the drive. I will let you know how all of this goes. Hopefully there is a solution in there somewhere!

Do you really need to back in? That's really what it boils down to if nothing else works.
