Spare keys
After losing my car keys today at work, I realized it's probably time I take a spare key and hide it somewhere on the vehicle.
Anyway, I went to walmart tonight and had them cut me a couple of new keys. They fit the ignition fine and would start the key, but after a couple of seconds it would die. I also noticed a red light flashing on the instrument cluster, so I'm assuming it thinks the key is a fake and the vehicle is being stolen. I noticed the Jeep logo rock keys in my quadratec catalog. How is it these will work on the 07's, even though they have no chip (I assume) but a normal key won't? What do I need to do to get some spare made, without spending a fortune?

go to the dealer, the key has a security feature in it. The dealer can cut you a key I believe.

I am pretty sure the Jeep logo rock keys in the quadratec catalog do have the chip in them and your Jeep can be programmed to accept them. You can also get the keys with the chips on Ebay for around $12. If your friends with your local Jeep dealer parts department you can buy the grey (chip) keys for about $30.
If you have two functioning keys you can program up to like 8 more by yourself. If you do NOT have two keys, the dealer must program the new key to the Jeep with the scan tool. They charge like $50 (plus the key price) to do this.

You can buy the Sentry key off eBay for about $10 each; will come with programming instruction which is easy to follow. Bought two and programmed them... of course, one is hidden and used it once already.
You must have two keys to program the 3rd, so if you lost a key may need to go to a dealer to get the second one made which will cost quite a bit.

But all JKs require a transponder key since the sentry key system is standard on the JK. So you must get the keys with the chip if you want your Jeep to run... ![]()

Im not sure about the U.S but I know in Canada it is going to be the law that all new vehicles have a chip in the key. I lost my keys to my 03 TJ and had to tow it into the dealer. They get the right key from parts with your vin#. Then they bring the new keys and a little computer programmer out and "flash" your new keys. Jsut make sure you call around for quotes. The dealer I bought my jeep from wanted $300 plus programming. I laughed and hung up. Another dodge dealer across town was $99 cash. |
