Something new happened to my JK this morning......ticking sound

Ok, so most everyone is familiar with the ticking issues some of us are having on these Pentastar engines. Having said that, I recently took my 2012 in to the dealer to address the ticking sound mine is making. As i expected, they said there is nothing wrong with it and to drive it. Of course to me it sounds like a couple rocks in a coffee can rattling around but whatever. So, i have been driving it as if nothing is wrong and the ticking is still there. However, i got in it this morning to leave for work. When i started it, it was ticking louder than i have ever heard it for 2-3 seconds, then it stopped completely and is running totally quiet as of today. All the way to work today, totally silent, no ticking at all.

Here's my concern, did something go ahead and break or did this thing miraculously fix itself? It's really strange how it just stopped instantly after doing it for some 30K+ miles.

Anyone else seen this happen?

if it codes out to p302 or 6. then it is a bad valve/seat. in most cases of miss fire. THEN they will have look see. But not like they are doing leak down tests. to see if its failing or not before it fails.

The light hasn't come on and everything is working as normal. This is really strange to me. I've been working on cars my whole life but i have to say, this is a first for me.

Only in a Jeep do we find it noteworthy when noises STOP.
"Hey, wait a minute... What happened to that clattering???" :D

LOL, heck yeah. As long as it has stopped i'm good. However, considering my luck i'm sure it is too good to be true and it will return. :D

Well, the other side of that particular coin is that the thing that was making the noise has probably fallen off. It's like when the oil leak underneath stops for no apparent reason, through no action on your part. It's time to add oil!

LOL, yes and that is my biggest concern. I am waiting now to be driving down the road and hear a loud knock and then for it rattle to its death. Thank goodness for the warranty. :highfive:

Changed the oil yesterday. Went with Mobil 1 5W30 fully synthetic and a wix filter. It is amazingly even quieter now. Did not see any shavings or metal flakes in the old oil. It was dirty but clean from any foreign objects as best i could tell.

Never been much for good luck but in this case i hope luck has dealt me a good hand.

Well, the ticking is back and worse than ever. It sounds like a lifter losing prime to me. If it sits for 2 days it rattles so loud for 2-3 seconds it is insane. So, the dealer said bring it back. Should be interesting to see what lame excuse they are gonna try to use this time.

Very interesting...Sorry to hear of your troubles. I hope you get positive feedback from the dealer. I have a 2013 that has made this exact rattle since new. It only makes it at initial start up for a couple seconds then goes away. I also notice that the longer the Jeep sits between starts the louder and longer it is. I only have about 2500 miles to date. I've recorded it a couple times on my phone to playback for service advisor. I fully expect to hear that they can't duplicate the problem. It won't happen unless I leave it there a few days and then start it. I curious to hear what your dealer says. Please update thread after trip to dealer.
