Soft top for 2012 unlimited

My daughter is looking to buy a 2012 Rubicon unlimited. Low miles and in good Texas condition. 6 Cylinder with lots of options. Good year bad year? What would be needed for a complete soft top.

Can't go wrong with a rubicon. So I'm guessing the jeep has a hard top now? You'd need to buy a replacement soft top that has the frame and hardware. I've never had a hard top, but I believe you'll also need door surrounds and a tailgate bar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't even own a jeep anymore

All true for the soft top.

Early-manufacture models (the build date is on a sticker in the driver's door jam) prior to roughly March '12 have a problematic cylinder head design that sometimes leads to a check engine light for a cylinder misfire, and loud ticking noise. This engine ticks anyway, but the bad heads are much louder. Jeep's been replacing them as they go, it's not a recall but it's a known problem and it sounds like they're no longer being stingy about it. There's a revised design that seems to fixing the far nobody here has posted that the problem has returned, and there were several users with the tick/CEL.

But some of us haven't had a problem yet...I'm over 30k miles on a Feb built Jeep and it's been fine. I would not pass on that vehicle based on this one concern.

Best bet on a soft top is to look on Craigslist for a new or slightly used takeoff. Many purchase the dual top option and never use the soft top. Much cheaper than trying to buy used. I got an OEM Premium Sunrider for my 2013 JKU new, still in wrapper and boxed, for $700 from a Craigslist seller. It was a takeoff from a 2014. I believe that currently any OEM top from 2007-2014 is interchangeable.
