Rubicon Vin ID

I am looking to purchase a used rubicon, Is their any way to make sure I'm getting a rubicon and not just a JK that someone has added the rubicon stickers to the hood. I know you can go to the dealer but they have started charging to pull the vin history. I also don't trust carfax because they typically are wrong on the vehicle's history. Any info would greatly be app.
Also which year is better as far as engines go? I'm looking to buy used so I've looked from 2008 up to 2012 models and I have to say the interior looks better on the 2011-20012 but for trail riding interior is least of my worries.

Not sure about the VIN but the best engines are the 2012 and up. Also if you’re looking for an auto the 2012 and up is the way to go too.

Rubicons have front and rear electric lockers and electronic sway bar disconnect. Only Rubicons have a D44 up front from the factory.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate is located on the lower windshield fence near the left A-pillar. The VIN contains 17 characters that provide data concerning the vehicle.

The attached image explains the 5-7th position characters for 2012 Jeep Wranglers:
