I wanted to get your feedback and see if anyone else ever experienced a similar issue to what I am going thru with my 2013 JK with the 3.6L engine (with the AC Heads).
I have owned the Jeep for about 6 months now and last week I have noticed a difference in the shifts once it warms up. It seem that when I'm traveling at an Easy, Non-Aggressive pace down the road and the jeep shifts into 2nd gear and then into 3rd gear, after each shift the RPM's are dropping a lot...lower then they use to. Once in 3rd I have seen them as low as 1000rpm while still trying to pickup speed. It seems to be doing it just as the "ECO" is kicking in. If I drive a little more aggressive, then everything seems fine.
I can't say the Jeep has staled or even tripped a check engine light, but I know it feels different then it has in the past.
Could this be a sensor or something else that would cause this? Any suggestions or past experiences you can share would be great. Thanks!
Normally, a second drop in rpm after a completed shift is due to the torque converter locking up when it senses there is not going to be a continued increase in load on the engine. Under some conditions, the time span between the drop due to shifting to the higher gear, and the drop due to TC lock, is minimal.
Before the transmission reaches a certain temperature, the torque converter will not be allowed to lock.
Is this first and second drop in rpm with no perceived delay between them what you are seeing?
MrWhipple...I can definitely rev over 3k. There is no hesitation on acceleration and if doing a "merging into traffic" acceleration the shift is perfect.
Ronjenx...I'm familiar with the torque converter lockup feel. This is not that. This is the feel after a shift or lockup. When a vehicle shifts or the converter lock you always get an RPM drop, that is the purpose of changing gears. My issue is that it feels like the RPMs are dropping to low. So low that if I go to accelerate at that time there is no power for a second or two.
If you decide to visit your local dealership for further diagnosis I'd be happy to follow up with them for you if needed. Just PM our page with your VIN and let me know!
ronjenx....The feel that I am getting could better be described as....picture driving a manual transmission and when your shifting from first gear to second gear you miss second and go in third instead. The vehicle stays running but there a lack the power until you give it more pedal and pickup speed. This may be an extreme example but it is a similar feel....
Andrea.....Thank you for the offer! If I PM you my VIN could you tell me what factory warranty I have left on the vehicle. I am the second owner and have only had the Jeep for about 6 months. Thanks!
I thought it might be related to oil pressure or the oil pressure switch, but I think that usually involves it dropping out of gear above 3000 rpm, which yours isn't.
