Ring & pinion swap require new Carrier?! 09 JK"X" wanting 4.88s

I have done a search and only found open ended questions about what I am trying to find. I am about to install 35's on my 09 "X". I have researched and decided 4.88s should be the happy ratio for me. I logged on to a few websites selling the gears, and ran across MANY more versions and questions than I expected.

I have learned that my Dana 30 Front axle requires "reverse cut" gears. The rear Dana 44 is "standard". But occassionally i see notes talking about wether the stock gears/carrier are "3.73 and higher, or 3.73 and lower". I am confused about what I am reading and require. I am 90% sure my BASE model X has crappy 3.21 gears (or worse). Does this mean I have to buy a new "carrier" to mount the 4.88 ring gear to?!

Also, where can I find the FACTORY gear ratio (original owner)? And is there an easy or good deal company to order my geras & install kit from?

The d30 has what is called a carrier break. That means 3.73 and up numerically use one carrier and anything under 3.73 such as 3.21 uses another carrier.

If you ever plan on a locker now would be the time to do it since you most likely need a new carrier anyway. If you don't want a locker you should be able to find an open carrier for 3.73 and up gears for under $100 new.

4ws.com has the cheapest price I have seen on gears. $540 gets you front and rears with master install kits.

As far as seeing what gear ratio you have jack up the back and see how many times the driveshaft turns for 1 rotation of the tires. a little over 3 is 3.21 a little over 4 is 4.10s and 3.73s is almost 4.

I had never heard of that 4ws.com before. HOLY CRAP, they have awesome prices and free shipping! That new carrier (3.73+) is only $60.

Does the D44 require a numerically higher carrier/locker?
