Don't get the transmission hot oil TSB recall done. I've got this code update, and now I cannot program a RFID key. I will have to take it to a dealer to fix the code.

I have an 07 JKU Rubicon, I had that TSB done in November. I programmed 2 keys yesterday no problem. I got them off eBay for $7 each. My local hardware store cut them for $1 each. I tried both keys before programming them. They started the jeep and it died after a few seconds, it did not lock the computer. There is both good and bad information in this thread, so your results may vary.

Lots of aftermarket places sell transponder chip keys to fit JK Wranglers. Many are under $25. You have to have the key cut to match your key at your local hardware store.

Self-programming directions are in your owner's manual.

Google:

I had a non transponder key cut for my 2010. I tried to start the jeep with it. it will start but shuts off. Did this a few times. Nothing happened. Put in my transponder key and started right up.

A non-transponder key will open the doors and start the engine, but the engine will shut down after a few seconds.

I recently purchased an 07 JK that came with only one key. The dealer wants $140 for another key. Is there a way to program a new key with only one key in my possession? Perhaps use the same key twice?

No, but if that $140 includes some exorbitant cost for the key, you could buy your key from somewhere else pay a buck or two at the hardware store to have it cut and you would only have to pay the dealer for the cost of programming the key.

Our local hardware store has the programming equipment to program transponder keys.

Check with your local hardware store or locksmith.

Can a new key be programmed from an 'original' and then a 3rd?

Scenario: Buy Jeep w/ 2 keys. Program 3rd key using the manual system. One of the original keys is subsequently lost/destroyed. Now have 1 original and 1 spare.

Can the remaining keys perform the same function as the 2 originals?

I know this sounds far fetched but I have 3 adult sons and a number of grandsons and lost keys are inevitable.

Thanks,

john

Short answer: YES

Long answer: As long as you have ANY two working transponder chip keys, either original keys or replacement keys, you can self-program additional keys.

Directions are in your owner's manuals.

Good place to get inexpensive, Made in the USA chip keys here:

Second or third key?

I've found no option to do the 2nd key except the dealer.
